  • Old Unsettled loan.....

    O.K, here goes....

I have copied my post from another forum, I hope I have explained my predicament well and it makes sense to someone.

I am hoping to understand what has happened in my chequered financial past as I am hoping to apply for jobs which require financial transparency and I need to make sure I say the right things.... Llife was bad to me in the past, here's hoping I can make amens!!!! ok so here it is... many thanks for reading....

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly, I am not proud of the content of this post. I know I have done wrong and have lived with that every waking hour of the last few years. Hindsight is a demon I've got to know quite well.

    Right, here goes.

Back in 2007 my significant other and I took out a loan with a high street bank. We made prompt payments on this loan for the following 18 months.

12 Months after we took out the loan we discovered that we were going to have a baby. Our living arrangements meant that we had to move into a larger house and as such took a massive rent hike on board. Soon after my 60 hour a week job became a 39 hour a week job and money started getting tight. We struggled to get by and decided to visit the bank.

Here we discussed all our issues with the loan advisor and asked for help, asking if we could slow our loan down somehow. we were told our only option was to take out an emergency loan (higher value, longer repayment period, slightly lower monthly repayments). As we were due to have our baby, thus meaning my better half would be leaving work and losing most of her income) we felt we had to go ahead with it.

a few months after our baby was born my 39 hour a week job became 0 hours a week. Things were made all the more difficult by me not being able to recieve a rent benefit equal to what our rent was. Needless to say I found myself unable to continue with our loan repayments. The bank got angry. we went to the CAB.

Here we created a common financial statement and informed the bank we were seeking help.

They acknowledged this and asked for us to provide the cab with signed permission for them to access our details, and to provide a statement explaining our difficulties, and a copy of our common statement, which we did.

A month later we recieved a letter from the bank asking for a Signed authority, copy of the common statement and a statement of our difficulties. I wrote back saying this had been provided. At this point I became very fearful.

Another letter arrived a month later saying the same as above. we recieved the same letter for the next couple of months. By this point I had gone completely into hiding as I was terrified by what was going on.

then we lost our house (left our rented house).

We never heard from the Bank again. I hadn't informed them we had moved.

Recently I have been attempting to get my affairs in order. I have eventually cleared old priority debts etc.

As part of this I very recently paid for a full registry report on the address we lived in when we had the loan and also did the experian credit check.

Neither show any record of the bank pursuing us for the funds.

I cant imagine for a minute the loan has simply evaporated, but to have no record of the bank trying to find us? I have always kept the electoral register up to date and the Experian report has all of the addresses we lived at on it too.

Fear prevents me from calling the bank. the weight of all this has had a negetive effect on our health and I cant face that again. I am not quite in a position to afford large repayments yet, but if I know where I stand I can learn how to put the next foot forward.

I know what most of you think of me, it's nothing I haven't felt myself.

Thank you for any help or advice I might recieve.

We think nothing of you, except well done for coming here and your situation is a carbon copy of many others and nothing new so you can put all that to bed.

The bank had one thing on there mind when you went for help and that was not you or your family, indeed they see pound signs in there eyes that is the greedy sods they are.

Others will be along to give you sound help.

    Regards

Didnt want to run and leave this post - was just about to log off for the night.

On to the first part of the quote. You havent done wrong, you did COMPLETELY the right thing - that is put your family FIRST.

EVERYONE on this forum has had the shit hit the fan. We couldnt care less about the banks - posters are far more important. Infact, there are lots (if not most) of people on here that have been unable to pay debts - and used the correct avenues to tell the banks to "piss off"

Why (at the ned of your post) would you want to call the bank??? If they havent contacted you, then why chase them?

I can't see what you've got to feel bad about and I would let sleeping dogs lie. You haven't said how much the loan was for, or how much you reckon is still owed, but is there a slim chance that the bank may have written it off? I know that sounds too good to be true but they do give up chasing sometimes.

I note you're hoping to start a new job soon and there are some professions where you can't have a CCJ or bankruptcy history, but you haven't got either so I hope that this blip won't matter

What sort of jobs? What level of financial transparency?

WOW! So many replies already! Thank you all so much....

Oscar I have sent a PM, thank you.

FlowerPower and PlanB, thanks for your warm and honest posts!

The truth is I have to declare any unsettled or outstanding loan amounts, defaults etc.... so far I havent seen any defaults, but If I admit to having cowered and hid from a loan (Amount borrowed £15,000, amount outstanding £16,500)...

It's a bit of a long tall order, but as I guess you all know, If I can find out what's happened without stirring up a hornets nest I can get on with getting on....

            Thanks folks...

            rgds, Oik.

If you start asking the bank etc about the loan, then thats EXACTLY what will happen.

Best thing to do is what you have been doing, ignore it completely.

Are we talking about SC or similar security checks here then?

The Home Office has a pretty good database of knowledge anyway so if it's a post with sensitivity such as MI5 then the department will already have all the answers to the questions and they'll just be testing your honesty

If it's one of these, then you really need to answer openly and honestly.

There isn't room to fudge it.

Maybe someone can advise you on whether it's worth your while sorting this debt out with the bank if you have a whole new promising career in front of you and this is the only thing getting in the way of your future. Maybe you see this as a moral dilemma not a financial one. Wait and see what someone else has to say. It's always good to get a collection of different opinions before making up your own mind

Depending on what you are going for, even a bankruptcy on your file isn't always an automatic bar. It's honestly they look for, and wanting to check that you aren't susceptible to things like bribery or other undue influences.

O.K so after a quick word with Rizzle I realise I should spill the beans. The application is for the Police service. If I can be factual as to the status of the damn loan I can get on with life rather than not making the leap. I have applied once before and was succesful, until the vacancies were recinded, so although I know my application was at the vetting stage I dont know if it had cleared financial history checks or not... and now I have to start again, only this time I'm a couple of years down the line...

The Irony is I got in to debt in the first place because my employer found out I was applying for the police and my position became "no longer required".....

I hope that makes sense..... I dont want anyone to see me as a bad person, just a skint one.... =(
