  • Debit Card Payments Question

Wonder if anyone can answer this:

    Normally when you make a debit card payment online, although the money doesn't go out of your account immediately, it is normally 'set aside' by the bank/ building society and taken from your available balance whilst they await the company to come forward and 'claim' it. Quite a few times I have noticed that the money for such transactions has returned into my overall balance and then been claimed a couple of days later. So, here's my question;

If you then 'spent' the money again, on an account that had no overdraft facility (Halifax Cardcash), what would be the likely scenario when the original demand came in and there was no funds to pay it?

    Thanks.

You'd go overdrawn and have hefty charges.... not wise, really...

I did wonder. I have a dispute with a Gibraltar company for services and they haven't taken the cash yet so was thinking of moving it elsewhere... just didn't want to be at loggerheads with the Halfax thereafter. Hoped that they would just refuse the payments and I could let the Gib mob whistle for it.

Nooo they'll not refuse it, they'll pay it and make you go o/d.

If you dispute it them just speak to HBOS...

Even though the account has no overdraft allowed as it's a basic bank account? Sorry to be pedantic.

So, if I move the cash and get forced into overdraft I'd just end up with a bigger headache unless I then let it go into default and pay a fiver a month for ever...

ermmm, if you mess about with easycash and get 3 o/d's they may close the account so be very careful if this is your main bank.

I do not see your point, be honest - have you signed up to a payday loan or summat and cant afford to repay it? If you move the funds so you go overdrawn then you'll be fighting with your bank, why? Its the other company you're pissed at right?

Why bring HBOS into this who will just charge you - its daft, isn't it? Unless you start being more specific as to why you'd risk this of course

                Re: Debit Card Payments Question

Payday loans! Not in this life bud. It's a Gib based company that I don't wish to pay after a very terse telephone exchange earlier today and, having got no joy there and seen the money un-earmarked, I figured that if I moved it before the DC payments came in I would thwart them that way...

And no - it's not my main bank, so a closure wouldn't hurt at all.

Incidentally, according to their Fees and Charges page, there 'apparently' wouldn't be any for going into the red on that account, just a tenner for each unpaid demand. Guess I could live with that. It's the after that which worries me.

Edit... doesn't matter now as the debits just hit home. Missed opportunity. Probably for the best.

Buggery - however it is for the best I would say mate - pointless ruining your credit file unless absolutely necessary.....

Oh, it's already way past that! Thank you for the sage advice though.
