I'm a bit worried about this letter hubby received today (10th Jan)though, out the blue.
It's a letter from council saying:-
"Despite number of letters regarding council tax I note that there are still outstanding arrears of £1597.40 relating to 2001/2 & 2002/3 outstanding on your account.
The council has a responsibility to collect ALL outstanding Council Tax. If payment is not received the council may decide to present a bankruptcy petition to the county court. A court hearing would then be arranged whereby a bankruptcy order may be made. Please arrange full payment immediately, if this is not possible, contact the recovery section within the next 7 days" Letter dated 7th received today.
We're really confused by this as we had arrears on council tax that we ended up paying to bailiffs (for 2 years) in 2007 so as far as we were concerned we were paid up to 2007/8 then, since then we had to pay a lump sum for 2008/9 as we'd missed a couple of mthly payments, but the 2009/10 & this yrs 2010/2011 have been paid by dd mthly. The bills never had any payment b/f as a debt from a previous year.
Also, does the statute barred law include council tax? I feel sick, but our local council are like dogs when they get their teeth in. When i owed the 2 yrs I rang to explain we were having probs but they asked for an amount we couldn't pay & as we couldn't went & got a liabilty order then called in the bailiffs. We paid up as I'd just got a bonus from work, but then 2 mths later the bailiffs were back, it seemed to me once they'd got a result they pressed harder. I was scared stiff then that they'd empty my home so as I'd just left work with stress i just gave them what i had in the bank for the mthly bills so everything got missed that mth! I'm a bit wiser now, but the bankruptcy suggestion has sent me reeling a bit. Can you tell me what i should do next?
Thanks as always, FAW
UPDATE 17/01
I was really worried at first but now more angry that they can come in all guns blazing with a threat!! I sent a letter to them on Saturday & sent a copy of last bill that showed any arrears which was £400 in 2007/8, which was paid that year to the bailiffs. I've got all bills out & there's never been an arrears amount added on since & I've never hada bill for that amount. I told them how alarmed I was at their threat & asked them to forward documentation which shows that I have been informed of this debt & amounts they have received from me since 2001/2 so I can cross reference as their records do not appear to tally with mine. Just see what happens now.... not going to worry....FAW

Last time though I'd none left but had just been finished from work due to capacity so had a payout from them that paid it. After that though we paid by dd to stop it ever getting as frightening again. It's hard cos hubby is self employed & recession hit his game hard & I'm still on incapacity benefit. I've been trying to get my retirement on ill health grounds, I got rejected & lost my first appeal but my second appeal is in now, just waiting for verdict! You don't know how to twist the grip there do you?? lol only joking. Thanks again for your help - feeling so much more empowered by this fantastic site - they're right knowledge IS power!!
