Sub-Prime Credit Products
Sub Prime does not mean that it is not as good, as say prime credit, it simply means that if your credit is far from perfect, you may be accepted by one of the companies below as their credit scoring model is designed to accommodate higher risk, whereas mainstream lenders' score a lot harsher meaning you're more likely to be refused.

Credit Scoring in itself is a complex web of lies, secrets and scores all designed to benefit the lender in almost every scenario. The main exception to this is for Stoozing, whereby careful management could result in you obtaining credit interest free for a set period of time.

    Re: Sub-Prime Credit

Just to let people know if it helps my subprime experiences.

Having 3 defaults on my file which were 4-5 years old I was accepted by Vanquis and Capital One but Aqua and Barclaycard Initial turned me down.

Started with a limit of £1000 on Capital one. After 4 months this went to £1500 and after 12 months to £1800.

Vanquis I started off with a £250 limit. This then went to £750 after 9 months and is now upto £1750 after 12 months.

I was also accepted for the Sygma Flybe Card with 2 defaults with a £1000 limit. I have had the 2 30% increases on that so far.

Hope that helps anyone else! :)

        Re: Sub-Prime Credit

I decided to start off with the credit rebuilder after BR. I used mycashplus annual scheme and then after about eleven months, I applied for a mobile phone on contract. T-mobile accepted me (although they did request a £250 deposit) and after six months of having the contract, they refunded my deposit which in effect paid my bill for the next year (it was an eighteen month contract).
about six months after having my deposit returned, I got a letter in the post from capital one offering me a card which i took them up on never actually expecting to be offered one but sure enough, i got a card with £100 limit. after four months, this went up to £200 where it stayed for another year (or just over) and just last month, i got an increase to £800. its not happened overnight but it just proves that you can slowly build yourself back up. all is not lost.. xx

          Sub prime credit

Applied for credit cards and catalogues and all were refused and then I asked for a couple of sweets from Niddy but he said my credit score isn't high enough to get any but if I follow his guide he might give me a couple.

After finding out you cant get a 1000 credit score only 999 I think he just wants to eat them all to himself :boohoo

I followed his credit for dummies and applied for JD Williams catalogue and was instantly accepted and given a £125 credit limit.

My first order was paid in full and the following orders were just minimum payments and on my sixth statement my credit limit was raised to £900.

Six months ago Vanquis turned me down so after paying JD Williams for six months I applied again and this time I was accepted and given a £250 limit with a 48% APR.

I have gone from being refused to being accepted now and hopefully in 12-18 months I will be given a prime credit card with a low APR.

Thanks to Niddy's guide I am credit worthy again so if your reading this then his guide really works and will help you back on the first step of the credit ladder.

          Thanks Niddy :)

            Re: Sub-Prime Credit

            Just an update :)

JD Williams started at £125 and seven months later credit limit is £1300

Simply Be started at £125 and seven months later credit limit is £1300

Kay's started at £500 and is now £600

Vanquis sent me their credit card and I've got a black visa card with 32%apr.

I also applied for a Capital one credit card and was accepted but I've only had the Vanquis a month when I applied.

I've got three years of payments on my credit file and one Capital one default that belongs to Lowell's that will be six years old in July but Capital one still gave me a card.

My wife applied for a Capital one card and she has a default that's six years old this October but they want a deposit of £90 before they will give her a card.

She's doesn't have a lot of history just two clubs a Simply be and Littlewoods that's she held for seven months so I will give her the deposit so she can get some nice green ticks.

            £90 deposit for a £250 isn't too bad though.

PS, I still got the credit cards even though I'm on income support but I'm more mature now and I know how important credit is when you need it.

I don't mess anyone around and I pay my bills because paying high interest isn't very nice and good luck to everyone in their credit building :)

But my credit is on the up thanks to Niddy's guide :)

Mmm a comment I made on another thread got me thinking.

I'm not looking to get a credit card again in a hurry... but it would be handy to know,

For a subprime like Vanquis, how old would your defaults have to be? Mine are between 2 and 3 years old. Mortgage has been up to date for 2 years now and I'm on electoral roll.
                Niddified and proud!

Fought and won the UE battle, thanks to Niddy and this forum...

I know of people that got one when they had one added a month earlier, and others declined who never had one at all.

Deffo worth a try, what harm can it do?

As an aside, I had 27 defaults when they took me and now I have the usual £3000 limit.

Thanks Sir Nid - I had a go online and have gone through the telephone stuff this evening. Well you could have knocked me down with a feather - they have approved me. Fools! Brings to mind that Fast Show sketch with the old philanderer ... Me, with My record? given a Credit Card?... :ohno

I don't really want to use it but I guess as long as I do use it a bit (and pay it off each month) in the long run it should help the old creditworthiness when I get to 3 years + - Useful for emergencies and that's the only reason I want it.

Should add, my defaults are all over 2 years but they are all November 2009 - February 2010 so definitely not 3 years+ .

Still gobsmacked that anyone wants to offer me anything at all. I felt like saying to the call centre chap "are you really sure you want to do this".

Oh and they were fairly hard sell on the repayment protections stuff.... I had to ask if it was obligatory as it did rather sound as if it was. (and of course it isn't!). And offered me a cash advance into my bank (can you imagine the interest rate on that?!)

Niddy I'm full of admiration - 27 defaults has got to be some kind of record. Even I have managed nowhere near that :rotf I obviously must try harder!
