  • Parachute account, switching worry

    Hi all

New here, and probably likely to start a few threads soon as trying to get myself out of trouble and all that.

Anyway for now, i have like many got stuck in the payday loan hell with three PDLs. So this week i have been to Halifax and opened a new account (credit score must be better than i thought as current account easy! wtf).

So i got my next wages confirmed as going into my shiny new Halifax account by my HR dept at work. My worry is when i setup the new Halifax account i agreed to a "switch" meaning they deal with Barclays (current bank) and move over DD and payments etc.

Now after the moment i am sat here thinking "crap, what if the loan-shark payment authorities somehow get transferred over too".!

So at Barclays i have 3 PDL owed money, havent defaulted yet (9days time). And of course sure i setup these continuous payment thingies when i signed up.

Now i am worried when Halifax try and be helpful by switching everything for me (how kind) they will somehow move the dodgy PDL "help yourself" agreements too.

Am i panicking or could they?

Maybe Mods this i should have put this someone in bank account topics?

I just had another panic too!
About 20yrs ago i owed Lloyds a couple of grand, and about 12-3yrs ago i owed TSB some cash too.

Now having taken out a bank account with Halifax (Lloyds and TSB group)i am paranoid my wages one day might disappear to an ancient debt? Is this possible or paranoia!

I have no details of those old debts, never heard from either in probably 12+ years, nothing on files about them at all so assume there long dead and buried. But i am of paranoid personality and now im laying here trying to sleep thinking "oops my new bank account is part of lloyds TSB!!"

CPA's via your debit card are specific to the registered debit card. When you move they will cease to exist. Obviously when you close the other account clarify all future CPA's should be cancelled.

If you're keeping barclays open then write in and cancel any CPA's and also report your card as lost. Say you got drunk and can't find it the day after. They'll produce a new card number then which cancels old CPA's that were linked to the "lost" card!

IN regards to the Lloyds question i had similar thoughts about a more recent overdraft debt with them from 2008 and have had halifax since then no problems with this.

Key point is that although under same parent company they dont have ability to set off between group accounts (or didnt when i checked last which was may this year) so can only do lloyds-lloyds or halifax-halifax

Also as over 6 years they should have written it off by now as a business loss so i wouldnt worry about it (edit: add in quote and basically as Niddy said above)

Depends on the information you supplied to the PDL companies. Some use a 'belt & braces' approach to collecting money and ask for debit and bank card details so that if they fail to collect on the card then they will try a DD instruction.

So if you only supplied your card details you should be safe.

Which PDL companies do you have loans with? I more likely can tell you which companies have a dual approach!

Thats what worries me if they setup a DD, and good ol Halifax being "helpful" thinks 'oh we must transfer this DD from Barclays to us for him'... /slaphead

                Re: Parachute account, switching worry

You can also register for online banking for your Halifax account, check your DD's etc and manually cancel anything you don't want, of course
I always do my own DD changeover...wouldn't trust Halifax to get it right so double check everything they do...been there got the t-shirt with that lot.

                  Re: Parachute account, switching worry

Yea i could keep checking online at Halifax for DDs etc, but the purpose of moving banks from Barclays to Halifax was exactly to "chill out" and not stress, knowing my cash was safely where the PDLs couldnt touch it..

You havent helped my paranoia Elsa.... hehe

                      Re: Parachute account, switching worry

When you transfer out the new bank sends a list of all DD's carried over so you can check them. The old bank will issue cancellation DD notices as they'll be cancelled against the old account; in favour of the new one; so you can check them then too.

You'll know exactly what's going on at all times. Or just call the hbos switching team. Ideally I'd call my old bank now and ask "please confirm what DD's & SO's are live on my account".....

Then you'll know. If they say "quickquid" then just say "oh, please cancel that immediately".

If for any reason one went through with the new bank you'd reclaim under DD guarantee meaning your bank refund you immediately and chase the originator for their cash back. You hold the trump cards. Remember that.

                      Stop worrying.
