    Many 'struggle with catalogue debt'

More people are showing signs of struggling with catalogue debts than they are with payday loans, mortgages or rents, a charity has warned.

The Money Advice Trust's National Debtline received more than 25,000 calls from people with debts to catalogue companies last year, the biggest number and proportion of calls on the issue in the Debtline's 25-year history and almost double the number it handled in 2007.

The debt advice charity has already taken 7,000 calls on catalogue debts in the first three months of 2012 and said the problem is one of the most common that it deals with, putting it ahead of rent and mortgage arrears and payday loans.

In 2007, around 8% of calls the Debtline received were about catalogue debts, but by this spring that share had grown to 14%.
Joanna Elson, chief executive of the Money Advice Trust, said: "Catalogue debts go largely unmentioned in public these days, but advisers at National Debtline hear from nearly 100 people every day struggling to repay such debts.

"Many people might be surprised to hear we get more calls on catalogue debts than on things like mortgages, rent and payday loans."

The charity warned that many people do not realise that when they make a purchase from a catalogue they are signing a consumer credit agreement, which means the debt is enforceable in the courts.

Squeezed families on restricted budgets could be attracted by "buy now, pay later" deals offered by mail order companies which allow them to stagger payments interest-free.

But Ms Elson cautioned: "Many many people don't realise that missing a payment on a catalogue debt will usually invalidate any special low or 0% interest deal."

Catalogue debt is the fifth biggest issue the charity deals with, behind bank loans and overdrafts, credit or store cards, council tax arrears and energy debts.

      Hi all

I thought this may be helpful to many people including myself. As you know I was worried about my catalogue debts and all the others and you do put these things first when you are worried and scared that they will send someone to your house, take legal action, etc.. If you dont know about it.

I just wish that more people knew about it so that they can sleep better at night instead of worrying themselves sick about a debt that is not considered urgent or a threat to anyone.

      Hope it helps.

My experience with Shop Direct, is once they know you are in financial difficulty, they make no effort in setting up a payment plan (unless it is on their terms).

Instead they add interest and charges (including charges for 'attempting to contact you') until they sell the debt to either Lowells or Capquest.

Despite the dozens of threatening letters, I never once had someone collect my doorstep, nor was I taken to court (and these are post 2007 too).

If you do have numerous catalogues with Shop Direct the phone call harassment can be horrendous as they will call you several times a day for EACH catalogue debt.

Shop Direct also win prizes for the most unpleasant and arrogant collections staff you will speak to on the phone. I had one woman tell me (despite them receiving the no phone calls letter) that they would keep calling me until I had made them the payment they were after.

One phone call later, and changing my phone number soon proved her wrong!

Re: Catalogue Debt & ALL money matters

          Absolutely SnV.

I had the sofa company ring me every 5-10 minutes every day 7 days a week from 8am-8pm and some times earlier in the morning till up to 10pm depending how they felt!

I did the same with writing the letters, etc but they didn't stop. I even said it wasn't me on the phone, answered in French, gave them the AAD tel number and they didn't stop.

They finally stopped when I sent another letter off noting all their calls as harassment with a list. They wrote back and said that is 'wasn't their intention to harass me'.

I think people are very scared when they get the Doorstep letter... They dont show up at your door and never will but, so many people are even scared to leave the house in case someone is there waiting for them. It really shouldn't be allowed to threaten and scare people for money!

I should have put the link to the rest of the things listed at the bottom of the page when I started this thread.. Its all very useful and interesting. Will try and find it and post the link for anyone who wants to read through.

Re: Catalogue Debt & ALL money matters

On the subject of excessive hone calls...
We had 36 calls over a 5/6 day period...All times of the day and evening.
That was this year, and inspite of us sending the telephone harrassemnt letter last year after a similar problem with them..Them being... Very.co.uk..Shop direct group..
This last time around though and after blocking them with call barring, only for them to start again on another number, i decided enough was enough....gathered together all of the information i have sent to them and replies back...and have just sent it off to the FOS.....
They are beyond decent and any grief i can give back will be worth the time taken...
They have taken the 8 week period required to investigate complaint, they sent another letter on Friday saying they need another 2 weeks to finish the investigation...
Too late....Fos should recive my complaint against Very on Monday..
Maybe its going nowhere, but i believe if enough people were to go down the same route and apply enough pressure then things may change.......or am i just being naive...

Interestingly MAT (I have no time for them) state

The charity warned that many people do not realise that when they make a purchase from a catalogue they are signing a consumer credit agreement, which means the debt is enforceable in the courts.
                Utter nonsense

Which I'd like to add could not be further from the truth! Of course catalogue debts are to be treated like ALL others and thus no, nothing is automatically enforceable by the courts like the above quote suggests.

I know of hundreds/thousands of signed agreements, but they aint enforceable by the courts!
