    1471

"You were called today, but we do not have the number to return the call"

"You were called today, but the caller has upheld their number"

There is another one as well, similar to the top one, but slower which I assume cold callers.

Does anyone know the difference in the above, with my telephone number, it's ex-directory, and automatically comes up as the 2nd one as shown above.

Now the first one, would that be office based perhaps and the 2nd residential?

Asking because I could be missing some important calls, need to get a new answer-machine, mine's playing up, cheers.

Not sure on this one Di, really I never have thought about it. Maybe if there is anyone who has worked for BT they might know. I have always thought the message you got depended on the originating exchange.

I have to say that I seem to be experiencing a flood of similar calls at the moment. I believe most of them originate from the Indian sub continent. As when we are in we get 2 -3 spam calls per week from Indian call centres.

No I don't want referring to a PPI specialist. No I have not had an accident in the last 5 years and NO I AM NOT going to give you my bank details and sign up to your own telephone preference service.

      Re: Withheld numbers query

When I get calls from my brother in Oz the BT digital voice says "we do not have the caller's number" becuase they genuinely don't. It hasn't registered on their system.

When someone actively withholds their number (i.e. dialling 141 before the number or permanent 'number withheld' service set up) then that digital woman states the obvious "the caller withheld their number".

Same with my caller display which shows *Unavailable* when overseas call etc, or *Withheld* if erm withheld.

      That's my understanding anyway

        Thank you.

Also with mine being automatically witheld, I do not have to put the 141 in front of it when dialling.

As I am expecting some calls, mainly from HMRC, Tax Credits etc, I wondered if they would be witheld and which one, I suppose it would be the "first one I stated on my above post".

        Thank you.

          Re: Withheld numbers query

You've got me thinking now because some mainstream switchboards and Government departments say/display *number withheld* because they actively elect to be private and not *unavailable* because they can't be sourced by the BT computer system - so it could be HMRC & Tax Credit stuff ringing you. Other biggies like the FOS number always displays and you can 1471 them. So I think it's hard to guess who's been calling you.

Don't you just hate it when people don't leave messages

Make sure you have an answerphone, HMRC will leave a message, indian call centres wont.

My phones tell me whether its an international unknown number, witheld, switchboard, or my fav, internet telephone, which usually means indian call centre.

Maybe upgrade of phones is in order!

It's any number that prefixed +44 (country code) so basically it was an Indian call centre trying to tell you that you are entitled to reclaim ppi - the irony; if only they knew you was our reclaim guru. Funny as fuck - pardon the French

All you have to do is dial 1470 before the number and it unblocks the witholding number for that call.

                  LOL Niddy

                  Thanks folks.

It is more than likely to be a Indian Call Centre know in my luck!
I am ex-directory and registered with tps, not that it stops these call centres, can't report them because no flipping number!! I leave them stumped for words though LOL.

I will get my machine sorted, think I must have knocked the button somewhere, it's very sensitive.

                  Cheers.

I'm thinking now, if that was HMRC, then they would have tried contacting me again today if important (Child Tax/CHB) etc...

Up to now nothing, just confirmation of delivery from a tel number of where my son ordered bed, with a telephone number left.

                          Hi hon

That is true, I have in the past received letters, but also recall having a phone call back in the Summer Holidays of last year, they wanted to know what was on the cards for my son then, further ed, training etc and in order to pay the extension and so.

But yes I'm sure they will write to me if they need further information.

Just came across a nice little peice of equipment called CPR Call Blocker.

Comes prepacked with 200 known annoying numbers, blocks international, call centres, 08, witheld, unknown numbers, AND it also comes with a nice little Block Call button.

So if your fav DCA rings you, press the button and it stores the number to memory, then next time they try, they cant even connect, your phone doesnt even ring!
