  • Acne Medication advice???

My youngest is going through a stage of teenage Acne he is 16 years old, it's not overly bad but he is very paranoid about it and does have a few light scarring, not any deep scarring but we know our kids can get really down with this.

Back about a year ago, our surgery nurse had permission from our GP to give the dabber called Zineryt 30ml applied twice daily, it seemed to work for a time but then stopped working as even more Acne appeared.

So 6 months ago, we spoke to our nurse at the surgery and she then had permission to prescribe a Antibiotic called: Erythromycin 250 MG to take one in the morning and one at night.
Seemed to help the first 3 months, but then it flared up once again.

So since then, we decided to see our GP direct instead of going to the nurse as my son has been really down about this, and of course as he has special needs as well, this had made his life more difficult.

My son was taken off the above antibiotic and then prescribed Tetralysal 300MG Hard Capsules, to take one daily.
And alongside this: A steroid cream called (Elecon) Momestasone 30g 0.1% to be applied/spread thinly daily.

Now to me these products do seem to be working, and we are due to see his GP over the coming week for a check up, however my son is very impatient and cannot see the improvement, the only area that I can see where it's redder is his forehead, but I think more time needs to be given on these meds, and yet my son thinks his GP will provide a higher dose because he is not happy.
I have a feeling that the doctor will keep him on these for a bit longer, but he did say if he wasn't happy when he sees him at this next appoinment it maybe a case of my son seeing a skin specialist to have blood tests and to try something different, but he did also say it's unlikely it will come to this.

But my concern is, with the steroid cream, this cannot be taken forever and nor can the tablets really, but has anyone any experience of their own of themselves or their children going through this please?

Even my son have been doing his own research on acne medicines and he said he was going to ask the GP about it, but I think he needs a little more time before he seems more improvement on the stuff he's has to take now in my opinion, I know its his body but I am concerned of all the different medicines, he is also asthmatic.
The one he did fine online was one called Accutane, and does anyone have any experience of this medication?

    Thank you folks.
    A concerned mummy di30

Not an expert on acne di I'm afraid, but I did find this site with a quick Google. It answers your final question and looks as though it may address other issues:

    Is Accutane/Roaccutane right for me?

Hi, when I got ill I got acne, Firstly Erythromycin is a form of Penicillin for those that are allergic to it. and SHOULD NOT be taken long term -- the nurse could have really fooked him up doing this (wont bore with details why) however--- antibiotics really wouldn't work for that.

Did anyone explain to him these creams and gels (the higher the alchol and steriod the better) and you can take steriod creams for some time. it will get WORSE before it gets better. And the steriod cream he has been prescribed is a SUPER low dose im assuming because of his age -- so they have room to play if there is no results.

When I used the cream I looked like shit for 2 weeks then all the sudden BAM it looked great.

I don't like to advertise products either but I developed issues with the steriods and tried Proactiv, you know the one some of the stars recommend and it REALLY worked for me... REALLY worked.

but yeah it will look redder and worse before it looks better.

Accutane will NOT be prescribed to him its very strong and used for people who have had chemo. tell him to get off google and to really concentrate on letting this stuff work...(its also been linked with stunting growth in kids!)

Stress, Poor Diet, excess washing, not enough washing of the face can all cause acne.

Also, it depends on what his acne is like.. if its cyst like or just acne pimple like to what they can do....

but you can also look at natural remedies if he feels the creams aren't doing him just.

Just ensure that he washes daily on these creams, applies the cream with FRESh washed hands, (I used pads to apply found it easier and more hygenic) and not to try and squeeze anything as hard as it can be.

it will get worse before it gets better -- i was told that didn't believe it but seriously youve seen photos of me -- you can't tell i had bad acne.

                Ha ha Niddy

Thanks for the useful info and advice here though.

We did before he was put on all this stuff, try the clear and simple soap and freederm but unfortunately it's not for him, and I do believe it's excessive washing Jen, he does actually have that disorder as well of having a shower 4 times a day and washing regular in between, mind you it used to be 6 times a day so we mangaged to cut him back.

Very useful info though, thank you xxx

The possible side effects of Accutane would be enough to put me off it - let him see the list and he'll hopefully change his mind http://www.acne.org/accutane-side-effects.html

I had a contraceptive pill to help me when I was younger as it works on the hormones; not sure if there is a male "hormone type" equivalent?

                    I agree Diddly.

He may have special needs, but he is so persistant, I was telling him about this last night and he said "not everyone's the same" so I have going to make sure he has a read of this today.

I for one since dad was too many meds am very wary of them all, back some weeks ago I was prescribed 30/500mg co codamol and I taken them back and managed on low dose paracetomol for the pain and some movelat rub.

In my opinion though I see improvement with the latest meds he has been prescribed but he cannot see it.
I'm the GP will say the same as me too.......hopefully anyway.

                      Hi Di
Just thought I would add that my daughter was prescibed Roaccutane about 12 years ago, having tried everything else. There were issues around getting pregnant and she and I had to sign a form agreeing to an abortion if she fell pregnant such are the deformaties the medication would cause. She was 15 at the time so not that greater issue for her (she was a good girl) Obviously not relevent for your son.
I know the heartache and distress acne can cause so feel for your son. The medication worked for my daughter with no side effects, she now has 2 beautiful healthy boys. It may not be for everyone, I would say try everything else first and then consider the pro's and con's of the medication. Good luck with what ever you choose to do.

His GP REALLY should have explained that its going to look worse before it gets better

                          Thank you Clueless and Jen.

And sorry you're lovely daughter went through the same issues as well Clueless, and wonderful that she now has 2 beautiful healthy boys, bless.

Yes Jen the GP had already told him, but my son expects to have a magic wand lol, still at his coming appointment I do think the doctor will try to reassure him, he is generally a very good GP and with it being the first time he was passed on from the nurse to him almost 2 and a half months ago, I'm sure the GP will also find an improvement, I know myself and others here have.

Yeah its not a miracle im afraid. you can ask the GP to go to some micro Derm. where they help with scars etc.
