Watchdog have been contacted by over forty people this year who have had their share of “nasty surprises” when they were chased by the company for money that they did not owe.

Re: Wonga leaves dozens of victims without answers after it raids bank accounts

Unfortunately Wonga are not the worst.

One company who issue loans via text application (I kid you not, how the hell can you do ANY kind of responsible affordability/identity check via text) and just asked for debit card details got scammed for a six figure sum last year and then chased the innocent people whose cards had been cloned for repayment.

Trouble with Wonga is they have played the political game very well. They now have Johnathan Duff (ex senior cabinet advisor) in their management team, who obviously has direct access to some very important ears.

You also have to look at where the capital investment comes from for Wonga to start to understand the tendrils and roots stretch very far indeed which brings other questions.

These companies tout themselves as 'alternative lenders'. Simple fact is they are not, because the finance industry themselves do not put them on a level playing field.

Theoretically, if you take on finance, and manage it correctly, it should reflect positively on the credit reference agency files. When it comes to payday loans it does not. Many lenders consider a payday loan entry on a credit reference file as a sign of financial distress, making it MORE unlikley to be approved credit.

And so the nasty cycle of extortionate continues as someone who needs a loan has no choice but to go to the 'alternative lenders'.

            I could go on...........
"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

The consumer is that sleeping giant.!!

Unfortunately, they are the only advertisers supporting the alternative channels on TV. Most cake and chocolate adverts have withdrawn their support to cut costs whilst these companies are booming. Until they are taken off the telly the viewers will believe they are telling the whole truth.
