  • Building a Hackintosh

In one of life's great ironies, it looks like I'll be able to build a 'Hackintosh' using the very same graphics card that Linux doesn't get on with. The motherboard, drives, graphics card etc are all suitable.

It's not that easy to build one, as Apple don't exactly approve of people building Mac clones for peanuts with their own hardware, but there's a sizeable community out there to help with this sort of thing. I'll let people know how I get on, once I've downloaded everything and got cracking on it.

    Re: Building a Hackintosh

First thing I have to do is buy a legit copy of OSX Mountain Lion. It's only £14, so will hardly break the bank. Plus downloading dodgy cracked versions of operating systems from naughty sites is a mugs' game - it's all too easy to hide nasty spyware that is under the radar of anti-virus software if you do that.

If I'm lucky it should just boot straight off a USB pendrive. Gigabyte motherboards, like this one, are among the easiest to get OSX working on. This one isn't in the range that is the most compatible, so I may have to do some jiggery pokery, but there are people out there to guide us through these things.

Won't try it tonight, will try later in the week and let you know how I get on.

I think about the only unlikey "thing" you would get embeded in a dodgy copy would be a keylogger, as far as im aware, its about the only thing i know of that is a potential virus under linux

Let me know if it works. I tried this several years ago, even with processor, graphics, memory etc. Didn't work. Keep in touch. Thanks.

Interested to see how you get on. I've installed OS X Lion in Virtualbox to have a play, but not tried it on any real hardware at all.

Looks like I'll need to install it in Virtual Box first anyway.

To get it to work, I need to get the operating system onto a USB stick. The snag is that you need to have an actual working Mac to do this. And I think the easiest way to do that, as I don't have a working Mac in the house, is to do it in Virtual Box.

And this was one of the first Apple I computers. You had to build your own case, so one customer made this:

bootable mac os x 10.7 lion on a usb flash drive.

                      Lion OS is only $30.

Looks like your gonna need a way to format the stick to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in windows, avoiding the need to actually have a mac to format it first.

                            Re: Building a Hackintosh

OK, have encountered my first snag with the Virtual Box method.

Virtual Box says: "VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration has been enabled, but is not operational. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot. Please ensure that you have enabled VT-x/AMD-V properly in the BIOS of your host computer."

The thing is that I have enabled Virtualisation in the Bios, so I don't know why I'm getting this error. By the looks of it, this is a classic beginner's problem with VB and I'll have to google around some more to find out what's wrong. As I say, my BIOS settings seem to be OK and the CPU (Core i5-3330) is perfectly capable of running in this mode.

I think it would be more sensible for now to just go to my friend down the road with a Mac and create a USB stick there.

VirtualBox would be an incredibly useful system to get to grips with, and I'd appreciate help from you guys with that, but I'm all for doing things the easy way whenever possible.

Maybe something else on your system is using virtualisation?
