  • Fiesta Engine.

Question on a Fiesta engine. Had one before, and was quite a good car to me ..... I know some have problems, but need a Cheap and Cheerful run around.

Anyway, this one has a OHV crossflow engine. Apparently, according to the seller, this has NO cambelt or NO chain. ?? I know ford used to make engines like this (had an escort) but didnt think they went as far as a W (00) reg.

    Re: Fiesta Engine.

    From Wikipedia:

"Crossflow" is often used to refer specifically to Ford Motor Company's Kent Crossflow 4-cylinder OHV engine. This unit has been used in cars from the 1960s up to the present day, albeit with the addition of fuel injection and a modern engine management system.

I think he will mean the Valencia derivative rather than the traditional Kent crossflow if it hasn't had a change. The Valencia was crossflow, but not the famous crossflow - it was fitted as standard in Mk3 Fiestas though.

Can't see it not having a timing belt or chain - maybe he doesn't realise a cambelt is the same thing!

      Saw that Bboo.

As above, I am not convinced. Like I said, I had an Escort, F reg I think, that didnt have belt or chain, but didnt think they went on much longer than that.

        Re: Fiesta Engine.

Can't be 100% certain but I think you will find it has an overhead Cam and that means a Cam belt. If memory serves me right the Ford recommendation is 100, 000 miles.

Pretty sure the 1.8 diesel certainly had a Cam belt from @ the early 90's

On the Ford they tend to be pretty easy to change. If they do fail if the rpm is not too great they sometimes survive.

        Hope this helps. Handy

          Thanks Handy.

As I am say, I am unsure. Having not long spoken to someone, they say they are unaware of a car that has neither belt or chain - it has to have one or other.

Might be I just ignored my Escort as it had chain.

            Re: Fiesta Engine.

Yes, they were overhead cams, and I suspect it's the Valencia not the well known Kent. Most don't realise the Valencia is derived from the Kent, so he may be right while being wrong.

Personally I'd sue him for misleading practices - ask P1 about misleading practices under CPUTR 2008!

There's some cracking second hand buys around at the moment. I picked up a Citroen Saxo 1.1 last week for just £100, 7 months tax and 9 months MOT. One new coil - £10 from a scrappy and good as new. It's on semi permanent loan to my next door neighbour who is having a rough time financially.

£595 sounds reasonable to me though as long as it's in reasonable nick.

As I say, havent seen it, but the owner washes/waxes every week, says there is no sign of rust (not even on the usual Festa arches) and no rips in upholserty.

I was offered a saxo last year ..... I found that the pedals were rather close together. (Where the hell did you find that for that price - its less than scrap price round here)

However, I seem to struggle to find real cheap cars such as yours. Probably as there are too many that buy and sell near me.

I know there are many auctions, but according to some people they are only there "cos they're knackered" and the engine is "full of sawdust to keep it quiet"

Apart from a test drive, I dont see the difference between buying privately or at auction.

The old cross flow engines before overhead Cams had timing chains but that goes back to escort MK 1 and 2 and possibly 3.

I don't know where in the country you are, but as B Boo is correct in saying there are some bargains out there.

Last year I got Step Son 4 a Corsa R reg, 80K new tires, brakes and 10 months MOT for £450.

He lives in Cornwall where there is a shortage of cheap second hand cars, same down there would have been £650 +

I am in the South West and I always go Oop North for my Cars.
South Yorks where there are lots of cars for sale and the price drops considerably. It's the old story of supply and demand.

Problem is buying any second hand car unless you know the owner is a game of chance.

I think I know a bit about motors, but the last one I bought has left my thousands out of pocket. The con man who sold it me was better than I am

This week I get it's replacement on the road. It's an 03 with factory fitted sat nav and all the extra's. 250 BHP licence point earner. Put it this way I could sell it down here tomorrow and make 1K profit and it didn't cost me much more than your Fiesta
But I went up North to buy it.

Quite proud in the fact I got my insurance on it for only £230 fully comp. That's £100 cheaper than the people carrier.

                      Re: Fiesta Engine.

I went to the auctions three weeks ago with the intention of buying a van to fit out as a campervan. I was horrified, not by the prices the vehicles went for which were good, but the auction fees here were horrendous.

I was just lucky with the Saxo, right place at the right time. Plenty round here for £300-500 though. My last car was a Citroen Xsara which I bought for £450 from the son of someone who'd died. Lovely car if you don't mind not having street cred.

Similarly the Rover 45 I drive now I paid next to nothing for. Serviced it, changed all the belts. In 2 1/2 years its not once let me down and returns 50+ mpg pootling around. If I prang it somewhere I'd be annoyed, but it's worth next to nothing now, so it wouldn't really matter. As it is, it's a nice, clean car, goes from A to B, gets looked after mechanically and neglected terribly inside (mobile rubbish tips spring to mind), but then it has a soaking wet labrador in it every day, so can't really be too proud.

Hope this one turns out well. If I had a few thousand to spare, I'd love to go into buying and selling cheap, but reliable cars.

We will see. Going to have to cag some money of someone I think!

As you probably guessed, I like smaller cars. Even Rover 45 I would find a bit big and feel uncomfortable driving it.

Not going French though, had a Renault, had a Pug - thats good enough I think!!

I am Welsh/Cheshire border area. I know there are some cheap motors about, but I always get told about them AFTER they have sold

How much of a rush are you in? I'm further south in the Rhondda, but people often sell good cars for peanuts. I'm sure plenty on here would keep an eye out for you if you're in no rush. Obviously if you need it now, that's not much help.

                            Re: Fiesta Engine.

I used to know an old Guy in Sheffield. He was retired but had spent years in the motor trade. He used to keep his hand in by buying all the low end part exchanges from the local main dealers.

He used to say I don't sell cheap cars, I just sell cars cheaply.

If he picked up a car with say 5 months Tax and Test for £250 he would sell it on the next day for £275 -£300.

I had several from him because at the time I was doing anything up to 700 mile a week. I used to run them till the test ran out, take what I could get for it and buy another from him. It was cheap motoring, for the mileage I was doing would have wiped hundreds of the value of a good motor. Saying that I had some crackers from him.

I have heard that some good cars are going through the auction at the moment. It's a sign of the times that there isn't a lot of money out there.

Larger engined cars tend to be cheaper. With the rising cost of fuel it's no wonder 1.3 and under engined cars are fetching a premium.

Good luck with the search for your Motor Caravan conversion

Well, I dont have a job at present, but where I am looking, I could get the bus (just might work out a little more expensive). I got rid of the Pug as it needed a little work, and tax and test were approaching.

My insurance policy is still running. The person I spoke to said this would not be problem for say 4 weeks if it was a stop gap, but longer than that they would need to look at cancelling the policy.

To be honest, I have only been without for a week or so, and already miss the freedom!

I suppose so long as it has test 6+ months, that will do. Afterall, a 70 tax disc just adds 70 to the car! Obviously as above (Handy) smaller engined car due to tax and fuel costs
