  • Blue badge application time frame?

I submitted a blue badge application for my mum to the council and it's status is marked as received on 21st Oct. Heard nothing else since. How long does it usually take for a result?

They don't ask the doctor anything anymore. All done by assessment. I will give them a call I just thought I'd ask first.

So i rang the council today... They cant find the application. She said, did you use the gov website to do it? i said yes, she said, looks like something went wrong then because we cant find it, you will need to print a form off, fill it in and give it back to us.

She couldnt give me a timeframe, all she would say is, theres a backlog, great.

What i want to know is, why the hell does the gov website confirm that it was received on 21st October, and given me a reference number if its lost. Baffled. Anyway, looks like ill be re doing her application.

Re: Blue badge application time frame?

After sending in the form Lancashire County Council took about 5 months to provide the badge after sending an OT to confirm it was really required.

For my Mum (89), the GP would not even sign a form, as she said she could walk to the surgery, about 300yds. The fact she couldn't go when it was windy or raining was not raised. His test was walking more than 50 yards. My sisters had to take her shopping, church etc. dropping her off and asking her to wait until the car was parked and the driver returned, or until the car was retrieved for the return journey. It was not until (last year) an independent doctor at the hospital suggested her blood pressure was dangerously high because she was in constant pain from an arthritic knee that she needed to drag along, that the cost of hospitalisation exceeded the penalties of supporting the Blue Badge claim, and he signed, begrudgingly.

Unfortunately she lives in an area where many people retire and also a local shopping centre. That means that although very few locals get the Blue Badges, many visitors and people moving into the area or shopping have Blue Badges, probably from an easier regime. You can tell them by the fact that they can run in and out of shops whilst parking anywhere they feel like including bends, crossing zigzags, pavements, other people's driveways. Consequently, those locals in real need cannot find a yellow line space, let alone a Disabled Bay.

Note well the restrictions e.g. can't park in Westminster and certain boroughs in London with the badge except in a Disabled Bay or get a fine: at Ambleside in The Lakes there are Disabled Bays in the NT car park, but they are not free or cheap and payment requires number plate details which are compared to entry/exit photos.

Re: Blue badge application time frame?

I know what you mean, ive lost count of the number of Range Rover 4x4's ive seen with blue badges taking up all the disabled bays. Im sure some are genuine, but i just cant get over the fact that they all seem to drive really nice cars. Perhaps ive got it wrong, and the truth is, those cars were obtained at a discount through various benifits (i think i know of one where you get the HP interest paid if you need a specialised vehicle)

Luckly, my mothers GP said shes willing to state she needs a blue badge, she did congratulate her on attending her appointment yesterday without the need for one, but she understands my mother does need a wheelchair 99% of the time.

The form is just so hard to fill in truthfully though, like one of the questions is how far she can walk in metres. They give an example of a bus being 11 metres, and the average adult step being around 1 to 2 metres, but ive never actually counted how many she can do! plus it depends on whether her symptoms are worse or a little better on the day. It isnt a simple case of, can or can not.

The only option i have is to be truthful and use the bad days as the answer.

                        .
Marching pace is taken as being a 1 metre step - from Roman times.

I cant stretch my stride to 1 metre without being extremely uncomfortable and find 70cms / 2.5 ft much easier. (actually tested it for something last week) I would love to see someone with a 6ft 6" / 2m stride. I really don't think that's possible unless you have a 40" inside leg.

Well when she does walk she shuffles so no way is one of her steps a metre or even close to it. Fuck it I'm putting her down on the low side and let the OT figure it out.

I would use the worst case scenario for all of the questions, we did with MiL and we got one with very little trouble also the changes to the house. her GP although a bit of a nitwit, backed the application and filled in all the forms.
