Virgin starts automatic compensation for train delays

This is a duplicate of the Blog Entry made on: 3rd October 2015 10:38
Virgin has become the first train company to automatically compensate some passengers if they are delayed. From Saturday 3 October, travellers using its services on the West Coast mainline - and who book their tickets via the company app or website - will receive automatic repayments. The government urged other train operators to follow suit.

The idea follows the announcement that delayed passengers now have the right to compensation in cash. Until this summer, all compensation was paid in vouchers."Our plan is to make sure passengers across the country benefit from schemes like this, and we are encouraging other operators to roll out similar schemes nationwide," said Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.

    Reluctance to claim

Virgin train passengers who are delayed will receive compensation back on to the card they used for the purchase.
But they will only be able to get compensation if:

    • They use Virgin's West Coast Mainline. The scheme may later be extended to include Virgin's East Coast service.
    • They book through the company website, or via the app
    • They purchase an advance ticket for a specified train
    • Virgin is confident that a delay of at least 30 minutes has occurred. Journeys across multiple operators will not be eligible.
    • Passengers were not told about delays before they bought a ticket

Good on you Sir Richard Branson. I salute you for this initiative

Oh, and I'm travelling to Liverpool on Friday on one of your trains so I'll have my stopwatch with me.

Remember the days use to travel on German trains in the 60s, they lead in the punctual table, in/out within 1 minute, come to Blighty and sat in freezing cold stations with locked waiting rooms and trains on time record dismal.

When are the other companies going to follow?

Oh dear, I should never have tempted fate

So I travelled from London to Liverpool on a Virgin train last Friday. It arrived 30 minutes late. No "leaves on the line" and no other outside influence (acts of God or terrorism threats etc) as far as I could tell.

Anyway unsurprisingly I made a noisy fuss which prompted a Virgin 'sky captain' to swoop into the seat next to me and take my contact details. I was promised a free ticket from London to Liverpool as a way of keeping me quiet in case my protest was heard by other disgruntled passengers (I admit I was being a bit loud at this point).

So Sir Richard, where's my refund and where's my free 'ticket to ride' to Liverpool (with apologies to the Beatles).

            Credit where credit's due.

Virgin trains have offered me two complimentary First Class return tickets to Liverpool as compensation. Since I have to travel to Liverpool on a monthly basis this gesture of goodwill is most welcome.

How refreshing to see a business put its money where its mouth is.

            Thank you Sir Richard

I suppose it has nothing to do with this BBC story which reveals Virgin had 257,254 complaint *tweets* in 2014 and has a specialist Twitter Team to deal with all their disgruntled passengers. It seems I am not alone.
