As far as I know you are correct in assuming that the number of the code allocated is the number of "tens" of pounds you can earn before tax kicks in.
One thing though is he getting any help from anywhere else at the moment like some of the benefits, training grants etc as they now get rolled in to income?
A few random thoughts.

Thank you Garlok
I have a copy of his payslip here, as his mum wanted me to ask on their behalf, he is paying NI as well as Tax.
Its just a basic payslip which just says Salary, showing the full gross pay and deductions of both as stated.
No other benefits, I just asked them over the phone now.
Thank you.Last edited by di30; 29 December 2011, 20:07.

Tax code and pay query.
Hi Folks
Was talking to my mate earlier and her son's tax code is one of the common ones at 747L, so far he's earned up to 4865.90, but she is wondering if this means he should not be taxed until he earns that actual amount of 7475?
I always assumed this was the case, because she said he was confused and asking on how it works, as they now seem to be taxing his wages, first time this month he is monthly paid and due to be paid into his account tomorrow.
Any info for my mate will be great thank you.Tags: 2nd, allowance, april, axing, bank, benefits, con, credits, customs, date, debt, earnings, employment, friday, hmrc, income, insurance, job, letter, loan, money, national, national insurance, office, owed, paid, pay, phone, rate, refund, revenue, self assessment, tax, tax code, tax office, taxpayers, thank you, unemployed, wage, wages, working
