Just getting worried about the ratties - they didn't look well last night but don't know where my benefit forms are to get them to PDSA....anyone else looking at them would say they were fine but I know my boys

I won't go on but remember that we are living now in the third generation (assuming 25years per) that has always had the safety net of the welfare state and now all is expected on a plate without the required input of effort. I was born after WW2 but the wounds of that episode were still very raw in people's minds and I was brought up in the industrial heartlands where bombsites were still to be seen and much was still on ration. Plus we were afraid very afraid of institutions like Borstal and the fact that the birch was still used.

I don't know, CC, whether it is keeping the lower orders in check. There was the oddball who would not as in every society, but in general most of us realised that we should respect other people and their property, conduct ourselves in a proper way otherwise we would be punished in a pretty severe way.

example:- at grammar school our chemistry master also deputy head at the very first chemistry lesson said that we were there to learn, and learn we would, either voluntarily or he would knock it inot us with the cane. he did not cane an awful lot and he had no failures at O level GCE (proper exams in those days).

I don't know, CC, whether it is keeping the lower orders in check. There was the oddball who would not as in every society, but in general most of us realised that we should respect other people and their property, conduct ourselves in a proper way otherwise we would be punished in a pretty severe way.

I, on the other hand, did not need to be punished in any way to learn simple manners, basic courtesy and respect for other people's property. Nor did I need the threat of punishment to understand why one should never stare at a blackamoor, however much s/he might appear out of place.

I learned very little in the chemistry O level GCE, mainly because I already knew it; I had been reading about chemistry since the age of eight or nine. I had little difficulty getting an A grade.

A level was quite another matter for, whilst I hardly objected to learning, the new chemistry master had such a repellent and odious manner that the lessons became quite objectionable; partly through his bad marking of coursework and partly through an indifferent exam performance, I only scraped a D.

No Probs mate, a few more Handy Adventures in the pipeline.

Mind you it's been one heck of a day, first the thing that won't be mentioned Then when I took the dogs out for their evening walk the two terriers decided to rip pieces of one another again.

Result another emergency run to the Vets, The young one had her artery nicked so there was claret everywhere. She is going to be OK. But now the dogs have cost me a full months wages in just one week. Hey Ho, if I'm not around for a while I will be getting stuff ready on Ebay to recoup a few bob.

I look at it this way...she should be very grateful to put up with me
