and now to check the message boards pre cleaning the boys out (Desperately need a clean out...you can tell cos Milo awoled to the hammock this am. Milo is looking a poorly boy though....fur thinning....don't know why? He's been malting for months.....should I take him to the vets?).....

Can she really be so desperate for his pork in cider?

How did you know that this is one of Mrs Handy's favorites.

Here is the recipe, Take 4 or 6 Large slices of Belly Pork.
Season well, Marinate over night in a good Dry Cider with a few Cloves. Cover with sliced apples and slow cook on a low heat for 4 to 6 hours. Remove Cover and place under grill until the apples begin to caramelise. Serve with slices of Buttered Cabbage and new Potatoes.

Recipe as taught to me by the Chef ant the Pint and Piano Exeter.

Actually she's not been feeling too great today, frustration more than anything for its going to take a while to get the leg going again.

Hi SC, If Milo has been molting for that long it could be a vitamin deficiency of mites. I would get him checked out. Actually rats are incredibly clean in their habits, if you are leaving too long between cage cleaning it this may cause over grooming.

Check with the Vet that it's OK to use on Rats, but I think Malaseb shampoo once a week might help. He would need gentle handling to get him used to a bath, but Rats are Swimmers, it would be rinsing the shampoo off that would give most trouble as it's rather gloopy.

Nope they are pretty clean...

I cleaned them out yesterday and already Milo is looking better after that and a generous portion of chocolate drops

Even got a video this pm of them eating kale and carrott....

I might try them on reggie rat and get them a vitamin block....see if that helps.... to add variety to their diet....

It'd be easier than taking them to the vets and hunting out DLA forms...

Though might phone the vets tomorrow just to get him double checked....

thanks for the heads up about the mites though.......I'll think about it....

They're getting old boys - 18 months now but still behaving like they're 6 weeks old....

Seriously they wolfed down the kale and carrot tops....

PS doing my head in..went back to the cigs briefly yesterday....

So when is Mrs H getting the leg off and getting a wooden one - tee hee.....Pork in Cider sounds yum...did you poach the pork?

What do you think I am !!! I will have you know Handy lives in the food Capitol of the West Country. I'm only a spit away from the Original River Cottage, Mind you not many of the Locals like Hugh Fernley - Eat it all, since he made Costco put up the price of their chickens. If you want a Sausage Roll from his Shop its £3.50 each. You need a Mortgage to eat there. Kieth Floyd drank himself to death in one of my locals. Around the area are at least 3 more celebrity Chefs. Plenty of good (if you can afford them) Farm shops and specialist producers.

Once a year we go to a local Farm to buy a whole or Half pig.
Suffolk Old Spot normally. The farmer feeds them a pint of Local Ale before they go off to the big pig sty in the sky, so at least they go Happy.

As for Poaching the only thing I have ever poached is Salmon. well the occasional Sea Trout, Oh and Rabbit, Pidgeon, Venison.

Shame Mrs Handy doesn't like Game, I have pretty much retired now but at one time I could keep the freezer full for very little cost.

Nothing is further from the truth. Mrs Handy in a Head Scarf , plus she can't walk the Dogs anymore. Sorry to say she is a prime example of being careful what you wish for. She would really prefer to be back in the town. She likes the peace and quiet of the country, but misses just being able to walk to the shops.

I doubt if I will get the chance to pass on any of my outdoor skills to the Grandkids. The parents want them to grow up as Chavs, why else would you spend £50.00 on a pair of trainers for a 3 year old when you are on a DMP.

Once a year I used to run a short survival course for 13 to 17 year olds. I had 2 very good and experienced instructors to help me. We had all done several E&A courses ourselves (Escape and Evasion). These courses were great fun even though I used to try to pitch them when the weather was atrocious. When I gave the Kids a Rabbit, Pheasant and a couple of Trout to prepare and Cook for an Evening Meal it was a revelation

Most had never seen meat other than Burgers that wasn't super market prepared ready for the oven.

No I'm not Ray Mears or Lofty Wiseman, but I do thing that if all teenagers had to do something similar it might make a small difference. They have to want to do it though.

So yeah don't know what I've upped the nicotine/ml to but it's working - no cigs this am since upping it though it's early days but you never know I might push on really hard through it

Stress eazing via distraction...Got a new voluntary job yesterday @ the credit union. Alas my happiness was short lived by the Maverick having Monday syndrome and firstly saying 'it's dangerous for you to handle money' then expounding it by stating 'someone in severe debt shouldn't be working in any variety of bank' - even though (a) my debt is less than 4K and (b) it's manageable... but then that's the maverick for you LOL...

His elderly sister understood when I said I wouldn't be giving monetary advice - just doing admin work and I believe in the society and like I have spoken to my carers and they approve (one even filled in the reference)....

So yeah...busy busy busy making pinafores and working...no time to stress over psycho sibling

Just getting worried about the ratties - they didn't look well last night but don't know where my benefit forms are to get them to PDSA....anyone else looking at them would say they were fine but I know my boys

Hi Handy,

What a superb piece of commonsense in your last post. Many of us feel exactly the same. We used to have the Cubs and Scouts, annual camps, "the backwoodsman" badge and the like, "pioneering". Now all destroyed in the name of health and safety.

Some may laugh but those skills, learned at an early stage, have stood me in good stead in several areas of my subsequent life. Not least during my short time in the services and when I took an interest in sailing at least I could handle rope and at its peak was able to tie all the fancy knots and rig a Gaff Rigger.

I won't go on but remember that we are living now in the third generation (assuming 25years per) that has always had the safety net of the welfare state and now all is expected on a plate without the required input of effort. I was born after WW2 but the wounds of that episode were still very raw in people's minds and I was brought up in the industrial heartlands where bombsites were still to be seen and much was still on ration. Plus we were afraid very afraid of institutions like Borstal and the fact that the birch was still used.
