  • Extra Care Insurance 500

    Hello

I looked at my statement yesterday and realised that I was being charged for Extra Care Insurance. As far as I was aware, I thought this was an insurance that applied to white goods or something I have purchased in the past... I barely use the account now though. I have had it for around 18 years and have no idea when this was applied to my account. My online statements only go back a year and I burned all my previous statements during a bout of decluttering last year...

I decided to search Extra Care Insurance to find out what it was... I did not realise that it is classed under the PPIs (I have had no other PPI claim). I am completely clueless now what to do!!

I've read a few really interesting threads on the forums, but I am completely confused Is there anybody willing to hold my hand throughout this reclaim process at all please? Maybe give me a step by step approach? I have read elsewhere that with older accounts like mine, it is best to perhaps go straight to the underwriters (?)... and that around that time it is likely to have been Aviva.

Any advice welcome, although because I am so confused, I would really appreciate direct information and not being redirected to previous threads (some of which are a long time ago now anyway)!

    Many Thanks in Advance!!!!

Hi Indigo75 and welcome to AAD
Our PPI lady isn't around at the moment, but I'll flag it up for her. I know that she did an Extra Care reclaim as did others on here.

Do you have any idea what account the Extra Care was related to? Was it on a Littlewoods account?

        You're welcome
Sadly it's not my field but I've left a message for one of our mods who also successfully reclaimed on this.
Forgive the link, but here's the thread in the meantime, which you should find helpful: http://forums.all-about-debt.co.uk/s...-500-insurance

Hi, yes I have just come home and found this thread. It took a bit of a battle, but I managed to reclaim on this several years after it had closed.

You say that you still have the account, when did it open, do you have any of the paperwork? On what grounds would this PPI have been missold? Do you work? Do you have any pre-existing medical conditions?

                Re: Extra Care Insurance 500

Thanks Cym. I read yours and Di30's stories with interest and they were very helpful, it's just trying to extract the process out of the forum thread that I am having problems with. Probably because I am not used to forums!

In response to your questions - I think the account was opened in 1994/95. It was certainly no later than 1997. I no longer have the paperwork, after a declutter last year. When I opened the account, I was a young mum and naive and unemployed (although also married to someone who was in and out of employment, he was not listed on the account). I recall on some purchases that were over a certain amount of time that some sort of insurance was applied in case I defaulted on payments. I did not work until 2005 (part time as I was a student at the time). I have been in full employment (after 12 years of studying) for 3 years. I have an underactive thyroid but I doubt that counts?

                Thanks for your help!

                      Hiya

I note you said you still have the insurance? It then may be a good idea to request for any paperwork by requesting a Subject Access Request (SAR) but any statements you may have also should be of some help.
Being a student at the time it was added this should realistically be straight forward and of course any other thing you can think of as well if this applies. such as any pre-existing illnesses, but for being a student alone should really be enough, but do add anything more if this is the case for you. Hopefully it will be a straight forward case for you,but as Cym also says they are not always that lenient, but do perservere and keep at them, never give up, they will soon give in.

I would contact them in writng or email to request for a complaint form, let us know when you have this and with any questions you need help with. Good luck and please keep us posted, and ask for help anytime x

                          Re: Extra Care Insurance 500

                          Hi there
I was sent a complaint form with mine, but otherwise write to them and send a letter in the post with your reasons on cancelling as it's worthless to you and anything else that applies, as well as stating you never requested for it in the first place and assumed it was something that was just automatically included, but have since learn't that this is not the case, so for those reasons you are requesting a full refund with the relevant interest to date, and also request they send you a full breakdown. This way they will probably send you a form.

Meanwhile, if they do ring you tell them you wish for a complaint form as this is your preferred method of dealing with this matter. x

                              Further to your recent communication.

The Extra Care 500 is a type of Insurance that may help cover catalogue payments if the account holder (or partner, if eligible) is made unemployed (age 18-65), signed off sick by a GP (age 18-65), hospitalised (no age limit), diagnosed with a critical illness (age 65-74) or dies (age 18-74). This Insurance may also cover most goods purchased against loss, theft or accidental damage for a period of 2 years from the items original purchase date.

This Insurance was added to your account as agreed, on 24th July 2002. Policy documents together with a 30 day cooling off notice were issued on the Insurance start date and all premiums, when raised, have been shown on your account statements.

As this Insurance is optional, if no longer required cancellation can be requested in writing, via email or by telephone. The direct line telephone number is: 0844 811 1220.

If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us."

I was not employed at the time, was single, and not even a full time student.
I will write to cancel and mention what you said Di, but can I take it any further do you think? I don't recall anything being agreed or even why I would agree to it...
