    Re: Spam

I suppose like a PDL company, a scammer will have no conscience about emptying your bank account of all the money you need to live on for the month as soon as your wages go in?

And people who are using PDLs may be by definition a bit "desperate", so may be more susceptible to falling for a scam mail?

Exactly. Anyone who is interested in PDLs must have a pay day, and are therefore employed. That makes them much better targets for scams than large percentages of the population in today's economy.

Also, there are other uses for the data which can be mined using electronic phishing than just emptying bank accounts. Identity theft is big business in its own right.

I think what you have encountered is yet another little 'quirk' of the PDL industry rather than a scam.

Many PDL companies sell loans through brokers or 'affiliates'.

'Affiliates' just have to refer a borrower to PDL companies to earn a commission, so its likely you are being spammed by a PDL company 'affiliate'.

You then click on the link to make an 'application' and your details get passed from the 'affiliate' to the PDL company.

        Now this presents some problems:

        1) Most 'affiliates' are associated with multiple PDL lenders, this means that borrowers details are frequently passed to multiple lenders often without their knowledge or permission. The borrower then gets inundated with spam from PDL companies they had no intention of dealing with

        2) There affiliates frequently do not state the PDL companies they will pass details onto. This means that a borrower could have their details passed to a lender who they have previously had a loan with and defaulted. The result being that the PDL company immediately empties the bank account of the borrower if these details where passed by the affiliate (lets put aside whether you should be taking out another PDL having previously defaulted on another).

        3) Affiliates not having a CCL, not advertising interest rates, not regulated by OFT/MOS etc

        4) Affiliates advertising using PDL's for things like Christmas, Holidays etc which its obvious these loans are completely unsuitable for, but the actual PDL companies washing their hands of the actions of their 'affiliates'

        The list goes on.

Most of these affiliates send 100's of 1000's of spam emails to earn that referral commission. I've been keeping a track of what I get on a daily basis and it averages 15-20 emails a day.

Putting aside whether this is moral or not, I would suggest that most desperate people, bombarded like this, would, sooner or later, be subject to temptation.

And thats when the problems really start...........
