The Government is committed to enabling disabled people to fulfil their potential and play a full role in society.
Crucial to this is the reform of Disability Living Allowance – a lifeline for many, but which is simply not working in its current form.
In the last 10 years the number of people claiming rose by over a third, from around 2.4 million to 3.2 million.
And expenditure is now far in excess of initial estimated costs.
This year DWP expects to spend over £13 billion on DLA
As a percentage of GDP, we spend a fifth more than the EU average on disability benefits.
... and expect to spend more in real terms in 2015/16 than we did in 2009/10.

The most interesting part is this which has been put back two years.

We also listened carefully to concerns about the speed of reassessment.
To that end we will now undertake a significantly slower reassessment timetable to ensure we get this right.
It will be phased in starting with new claims only in a controlled start area in the North West and parts of the North East of England from April 2013.
We will then take new claims nationally from June 2013.
From October 2013 we will start reassessing people whose DLA award is due to end, people who report a change in condition and young people who reach the age of 16.
But now the peak period of reassessments will not start until October 2015.
This means we can learn from the early introduction of PIP – testing our process, and making sure the assessment is working correctly before we embark on higher volumes.
We will then consider the findings of our first independent review planned for 2014 and act on its findings.
Importantly, unless they report a change in their condition, those with a lifetime or indefinite DLA award will not be reassessed until October 2015 at the earliest.

Hi PF, once again thank you, an interesting read.

Although it has the smooth looks of 'we are listening and helping you' between the lines it smacks of cutting money again, everyone knows this, people with an indefinite award will be able to rest a little for a couple of years maybe until this falls on its knees.

Saying that DLA does not work in its current form is utter bollox, more people claim it because they are entitled, it is more than filling in a 40 page form - or a few pages as the tabloids put it.
We are a much more savvy nation now and lets not forget that snatcher thatcher introduced this to save money in the first place, wasn't it Baroness Grey-Thompson that said DLA was the benefit with the lowest fraud rates of them all.

Personal Independence Payment will be, easier to understand and administer, financially sustainable. Well although they are pitching the rates similar or the same as DLA this sounds very much like cuts once more.

NEW PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE (PIP) PAYMENT RATES RELEASED:

The amounts of PIP are:

Daily living component

1. standard rate – If you have a limited ability to carry out daily living activities - £53.00
2. enhanced rate – If you have a severely limited ability to carry out daily living activities - £79.15

Mobility component

1.standard rate – If you have a limited mobility - £21.00
2. enhanced rate - If you have a severely limited mobility - £55.25

Easier to administer always means easier to cut.

This government is very adept at divide and rule. Everyone of us has our own horror stories be it something like this public workers private workers UB pensioners and you can go on and on and on.

However top bosses pay has soared yet again/ Politicos still feed at the trough and are still getting caught for it, crimminals get to vote, terrorists get to stay, economic students get visa's without checks and then they wonder why migration went through the roof.

I just wish as a nation we would stop having ago at the next unfortunate group thats in todays firing line and continually keep bringing the attention back on the elite. The ones who have right royally screwed this country.

We are so NOT in this together. But we are all happy when some other group is shafted as it keeps the spotlight off us for another day.

What is annoying are the amounts of immigrants that come here and claim DLA, okay if they genuinely need the award then that is fine but it should be paid at the rate of the country that they have come from and not UK rates, this a proportion of why the UK pays a fifth more than other EU countries. It is not the fault of disabled people.

Isnt that what all those Labour ones were doing last time and ended up doing porridge??

Its high time all this nonsence stopped.

Buy up a block of flats close to Westminster. You have one room to live and sleep in. They are all decorated to local authority standard no posh stuff.

When you lose your seat you give it back. You keep you one and only house and you pay for it with a mortgage like the rest of us poor sods.

You get subsidised travel too and from your place of work ie to and from Westminster from your home. Everything else is receipt based.

No more duck houses or the like.

Better yet, make them stay in the spare rooms of disabled people facing the bedroom tax, and pay them rent..
