  • DLA & home visits on renewal.

On behalf of my ex bro in law.

But to begin with my youngest son with autism and receives DLA for both care and mobility and normally I would know how it works, but not when an arrangement have been put in place to have a visit from own GP when re-newing the benefit. However, my son's is not due to end or be renewed until a day before his 18th birthday, so another year away yet, but will be interested to know what happens from then.

    My Main Query here......

My ex brother in law has back disabilities and has been on medium rate care and high rate mobility for the last 2 or maybe 3 years, but he has now had to renew it or it will run out by Feb 2012.

He lives in an adapted gound floor disability flat and also has a car through mobility, but on re-newing he has now received a letter from the DWP to confirm a visit from "his own GP".
What baffled me was I assumed the DWP use their own specialised GP and not exactly the patient's own doctor, so since this is all supposed to change in due course, does anyone know if your own GP will be involved instead of their very own?

    Cheers.

    Di

This will more than likely be ATOS and what they call a health care professional only these will have no specialist knowledge of his condition.

They are mainly nurses or GP's that have been struck off the GMC register.

It is a shambles and the DWP will tell you porkies as it is now geared to get as many off DLA before the new PIP comes in so they can claim to have reduced the budget.

Seeking expert help and using the disability websites to gleen knowledge of what is going on is a must.

    Sorry it is bleak news.

Although they must take all medical evidence into consideration from his GP and Consultants they will twist matters at the ATOS medical and the DWP DM will take that evidence as a more reliable source.

This is why there is a backlog of appeals and why so many get overturned in favour of the claimant.

        Thank you Pompey.

        They are definately getting tougher!

Dreading it when it comes to my son's renewal, I don't know how they will go about autism issues though, my son has fantastic specialists who have been great and helped with his dla.

Although I don't think Daniel (my son) will be able to cope meeting new specialist authorised by the DWP - if they do this then god help, he is not good at meeting new people and already suffers with anxiety disorders alongside his other issues.

          Di,

In your sons case I think it is not something you should undertake on your own, but have someone professional with him and you.

I feel really ashamed with the way the Government is handling this - what a crock.

Thanks again Pompey, yes I will make contact with one who said to contact her at anytime, even if its for a chat, she is so fab, a funny name too "Dr Fok" lol, I have her email address and her assessment unit is just in a local hospital unit just a few minutes from me.

Yes its utterly disgusting isn't it?

                      Interesting that Pompey, cheers.

I don't think we have one here in Wales either, but useful though.

MENCAP have been great as well in our case, and as Daniel is still under them, they did say if we require any help even with form filling for anything, and dla in the future then do not hesitate to contact them.

link above to Wales and a general one for all below may also be a help to anyone.
