    Own goal, surely?

Rather than going out again tonight to steal even more?

Do you believe that army barracks would provide adequate - or adequately secure - accommodation for several hundred yobs?
Hi CC, thanks for the correction. I did mean to say "OWN GOAL"

I can think of several Training Camps which are only used periodically. Back in the first Gulf War, some of these had the Security Fences beefed up. Not to keep people out but to keep people in. This was a contingency in case certain Ethnic Minorities objected to what we were doing to their country and required interning for the duration.

It was even rumored that the TA (I was one in those days) would be called up to guard them?

At least this option whilst frowned on by some would stop re-offending.

As one Yob said on the news this morning "what they gonna do, give me an ASBO?".

Yep, you gott-it.... almost got carjacked.
That was why a Sarth Effrican invented a possible deterrent:

Do you suppose it might work?

Had he not been quick off the mark (and a brit in SA) I do think they'd have been carjacked and possibly killed that night - thus they returned to the UK sharpish....

Point is, until you're put in that position, we can all sit here and say don't do this, or even do do that - but as he says, he'd have died that night before letting them access his keys - BUT, would he really of?
He might not have been lucky enough to have been offered that choice.

A better option would be to use some of the Thames forts/anti-aircraft platforms from WW2, or any surplus drilling platforms; if they are incarcerated out at sea, they'd not really need to be guarded.

Failing that, there are numerous shafts and tunnels dug in various parts of London for the Underground that were either abandoned or never used; some of those would make excellent oubliettes in which to lock the looters.

As one Yob said on the news this morning "what they gonna do, give me an ASBO?".
He also said that it would be his first offence.

The trick would be to ensure it was his last.

And I know Handy will give me grief but the last time I was down in Falmouth the River Fal was full of decommissioned banana boats (really!! this is not racist). They would make quite good prison hulks quite cheaply I would have thought. Bit Dickensian but we would lose our forced cheap labour. Perhaps treadmills to generate electricity?

                              Hey Pompey,

OH spoke with No 1 Son this morning languishing in sunshine in the land of Oz. He is lamenting the loss of Joanna's club where he spent a certain number of hours of his mis-spent youth.

He also agreed with a comment made on Yahoo! news, "well at least the carpets will be dry now!" l

Mind you they call these riots? You must remember when the "Nimitz" came to visit yeah?

Reading the posts on SA certainly brings back some memories... the attempted car jacking thing happened to me when I lived there, unfortunately for the car jackers (well one n particular that got out and tried to open my door....well lets just say all he got for his trouble was a .38 slug in his forehead....strangely his compatriots had no further interest in my car.....
