  • FTP File/Folder Permission advice - any experts?

    Ive accidently set a folder permission on my site via FTP to CHMOD 644, this has caused the bloody folder to dispear.

    I cant upload a new one as it says, file/folder already exists, dont have permission.

    I have Owner Rights so im stumped!!

    Anyone know of a RAW command line i can use to change it back to 777 or 775??

    Hosting file manager/FTP client doesnt display the folder either!!!

    (I have server side filters set to -al so its not that!)

        Oh. When you said "command line", I thought you meant you had shell/terminal access.

          Sorry my mistake, its a Raw command line in Cute FTP.

          I guess i could try terminal access? Unsure of the commands to connect though.

            Well, just tested on a ftp with Filezilla, and I could see and change permissions for a test folder set to 644?

            Or your hosting provider should be able to tell you how to get terminal access. Via ssh or similar?

              Re: FTP File/Folder Permission advice - any experts?

              my hosting provider first pointed me to documentation which was blatantly nothing to do with my issue, and has now said they need to esculate my issue to an admin to deal with.

              tbh i think my host is having issues because i had servername probs yesterday when redirecting hosts from another domain, dont ask!

              Im guessing as they have actual server access from their end they should be able to change permissions back for me?

                yes mate, they will be able to sort permission issues for you - some quicker than others thou!

                  Yes, they will have complete root access to the server and file, so will be able to change them back if they can't give you a method or access to do it yourself.

                    Cheers!

                    IF they take too long, i guess a sorta fix would be to dump the contents, actually delete the domain from my contol panel, and then add it back, wait for it to propogate and that "should" reset permissions.

                    Thats a guess as i have limited knowledge of this stuff.

                      Re: FTP File/Folder Permission advice - any experts?

                      I used this and it worked in the past when I did similar... But mine are CMS portals so may be slightly different, not sure. I'd hazard a guess it won't work for a normal site as you'll not have a main configure page will you..?
                      1. Create a text file on your desktop, and rename it with a PHP file extension e.g. chmod.php

                      2. Put this code in it:
                      Code:
                      <?php
                      chmod ("includes/configure.php", 0444);
                      ?>
                      3. In your browser go to: yourdomain.com/chmod.php - you won't see anything on the screen but it should change the permissions.

                      4. Delete the temporary chmod.php file from your server

                        Cheers Niddy, not sure if i have privilages to envoke that kinda command, but ill give it a shot should it happen again.

                        Support have reinstated the folder with the correct permissions now, so all is well.

                        Fingers crossed i dont have another full day of banging my head!

                        Spent the whole day trying to finish up on something and was getting shafted left right and centre with various issues!

                          secret - never chmod your files unless you have to and understand what each does (i.e certain php functions need full read/write/execute permissions whereas others just need read) but most are set up as standard with the scripts you install - but if you're unsure always check first using a guide like this --> UNIX / Linux: Beginners Guide to File and Directory Permissions ( umask, chmod, read, write, execute )

                            Cheers will do! its my own fault really.

                            I was getting PHP Warning: file_put_contents errors pertaining to a certain file, in a CMS i use, i stupidly googled the answer and some twat said the fix was to change CHMOD to 644. When looking back, it shouldnt have been anything other than 777 or 775.

                              Ahh was it Drupal based then?

                              0644 basically gives default values to files. The equivalent for the directory would be 0755 - but that said if using CMS forget standardising things as the way it is structured means that each php-include drags a different file into the header/side/footer/etc and some need different permissions so it's best to leave them as they came with default values.
