  • VoiP phone and PC set up

Does anybody with amazing technical knowledge have an easy way to help a tech-thicko with an issue, please?

I have a snom phone, which is plugged into my Zyxel router.

Currently, the pc broadband has priority; by this I mean if I am downloading stuff, the snom phone seems to get cut off or sound cuts out.

I also have a VPN connected whilst working, so this also seems to take up some bandwidth.

I would prefer for the snom phone to have priority on the broadband, and that my pc slows down instead.

    Is this possible, please?

Remember, I am a bit phobic, so any answers have to be in words of less than two syllables

VOiP phone? snom phone? Zyxel router? VPN?

Re: VoiP phone and PC set up

Ha ha, Pix... VoiP phone is a phone that works on the internet.....all calls are made via the internet and they can call each other for free. Calling normal land lines, however, costs money, but certainly our international calls are cheaper.

Snom is just the brand of VoiP phone - it does very clever things.....

Zyxel again is just the brand of router.

VPN is a "virtual private network". It enables me to log into the office over the internet and get access to the server where all of our documents and office software are stored.

Basically I can work from home, and with this phone and network system, our customers would have no idea that I wasn't sitting right next to my co-workers.

However, the broadband is serving my phone, my internet and my remote (VPN) access and it puts a bit of a strain on it all (broadband speed here isn't the fastest).

I would like my phone to be the priority item, so that if I'm on a call, it doesn't "drop". Sometimes the line goes quiet or the call gets disconnected completely (rare, but happens). I'd rather my downloading (nothing illegal Mr B!) or my uploading slows down instead.

Make a little bit more sense?

            xx

Re: VoiP phone and PC set up

Has that router got any built in bandwidth management settings?

A quick look on those sorts seems to suggest some might? And that you can set the "priority" of attached devices to high/medium/low?

                  rizzle, I wish I knew.

I have tried and failed to log onto my router, and it isn't having any of it! I can't get the password.

I tried calling Zyxel and my bb supplier, but to no avail.....

Re: VoiP phone and PC set up

What is the model number of your router?

Who is your ISP, and was it supplied by them?

Might be able to work out if there is a default password.

                        Have you tried?

                        user = admin

                        with

password = admin or 1234 or blank (literally, just click enter without putting one in)

Seems to be the most likely factory defaults.

If not, then your ISP may have set a custom one before they sent it to you.....

                            Herein lies your problem!

now kiddies this is why you should all be running a linux router with traffic shaping implemented.

default priorities would be VPN - PC (downloads "TUT" etc) - Phone

under the VPN you can change the settings to lower the bandwidth used for that, IE bring just the 'icons', through as opposed to the 2048*1076 background image from the remote desktop etc etc.

setup a 'capped' download limit on the PC so it will not download at anything faster than say *1mb a second*

failing that follow Rizzle's suggestion on the link

or get a faster broadband connection lol

                            .
