My Dad was targeted by Americans offering to buy some shares he has...provided he paid the "tax" (around £3000) first. Luckily, my brother and I managed to talk him out of it.

Now he's being pestered by "International Fraud Alert" who say they are part of the US government...but, of course, they aren't. The attachment he got in an email (to me, thankfully, as he doesn't have an email account) was full of sentences that just don't read right e.g. "We are committed to helping victims like you as we are aware that you can likewise help us in apprehending those who are still at large and continuously doing their transgression"

We can't get him to understand that it's not the US government trying to help him but another scam

The problem is that a lot of elderly folk are from a very trusting era.

          A follow-up to this.

It turns out that my Dad has been targeted by the "energy credit" scammers. They phoned him and he said he wasn't sure (don't know why he didn't just tell them to go forth and multiply) so they sent him the bumpf.

Now they're threatening to take him to court because he hasn't paid them any money...even though he didn't sign anything, or indeed send anything back to them.

Of course, the court threat is an empty threat but how many elderly people will pay because they're scared of being taken to court?

He's reported the scam to Trading Standards and Action Fraud.
