  • Ofcom delays 4G mobile auctions

Telecoms watchdog Ofcom is to delay auctions that would sell chunks of radio spectrum to support future fourth-generation mobile services.

The process was initially scheduled to take place early in 2012 following a consultation about the proposals during 2011. However, Ofcom said the strength of the responses to that consultation had persuaded it to delay the auction. It said now hoped to run the sale towards the end of 2012. "We received a number of substantial and strongly argued responses to this consultation," said Ofcom in a statement. These arguments convinced it of the need to run a further round of consultation because any decision it makes will "likely to shape the future of the mobile sector in the UK for the next decade or more" it added.

It said that the delay may not have a material impact on the date when 4G services become available as the spectrum to support them will not be free until 2013. Vodafone released a statement welcoming the new timetable. "We agree with Ofcom that there is time for reflection given that the spectrum will not be available until 2013....Read more on this story---> BBC News - Ofcom delays 4G mobile auctions

Everything Everywhere attacks Ofcom's 4G mobile spectrum rules

Britain's biggest mobile operator, Everything Everywhere (EE), has launched an attack on Ofcom's revised proposals for the auction of 4G spectrum, raising the prospect of yet more delays for the crucial sale.

Ofcom's redraft of the rules, published yesterday, makes significant concessions to Vodafone, O2 and Three, whose vehement lobbying had threatened to delay the auction. However, the revisions have now angered EE instead. The Orange and T-Mobile operator said Ofcom was "missing a huge opportunity" and damaging consumer interests after the regulator backtracked on plans to guarantee EE a minimum amount of prized 800MHz spectrum.

Ofcom was the only international regulator not to make "vigorous efforts to support healthy competition" by redressing imbalances in the allocation of "sub 1GHz" spectrum, it added. EE would not say whether it was exploring legal action, but any such recourse could delay the auction, potentially delaying the next generation 4G roll out. Ofcom's original proposals included a controversial system of....Read more here--: Everything Everywhere attacks Ofcom's 4G mobile spectrum rules - Telegraph

Owner of T-Mobile and Orange to invest £1.5bn in superfast 4G technology
Mobile phone operator Everything Everywhere today pledged to bring faster and more reliable coverage to its customers by investing more than £1.5billion over the next three years in superfast 4G technology. The new technology will allow users to download music and film to their phones at the same speeds as home or office computers, the owner of T-Mobile and Orange said.

Everything Everywhere, created by the merger of the two providers in 2010, has already successfully trialled the technology in the area of St Newlyn East in Cornwall, and will bid for coverage in auctions later this year. The group also posted a 2 per cent increase in underlying earnings to £1.4billion as customers continued to switch to higher-revenue contract deals and demand for smartphones, such as Apple’s iPhone and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry, flourished. Everything Everywhere, which has seen its customer base increase by 72,000 in the final quarter of last year to 27million, said that 48 per cent of all customers are now on contracts....Read more here--: Everything Everywhere - owner of T-Mobile and Orange - to invest £1.5bn in superfast 4G technology

Delayed 4G Roll-Out 'Threatens UK Plc'

British businesses are at risk of falling behind their international rivals if the UK roll-out of 4G mobile technology is not speeded up, a report has warned.

A survey of more than 1,000 UK company leaders found that 94% think Britain needs the next generation of ultra-fast broadband to remain competitive and protect jobs. Some 93% of businesses said they wanted 4G rolled out as soon as possible, according to the research commissioned by the mobile network Everything Everywhere, which is lobbying for the introduction of 4G in the UK. Another 86% of bosses said the technology would increase their firm's productivity. Martin Stiven, vice president of Everything Everywhere's business division, said: "In today's global economy, UK businesses need 4G networks to help them be more productive and compete on the international stage. "Half of the countries on the G20 list of the world's biggest economies already have 4G, leaving British businesses at risk of falling behind rivals."...Read more here: 4G Mobile Broadband: UK Businesses Under Threat By Slow Roll-Out Of Ultra Fast Technology

Vodafone and Telefonica team up over 4G

Mobile phone giants Vodafone and 02-owner Telefonica, have announced plans to create one shared grid in the UK. The move is designed to improve existing coverage and to speed up the roll-out of superfast 4G services. The firms say it will mean 4G mobile services, which allow users to download music and videos to their phones at high speed, can be delivered by 2015. That is two years ahead of regulator Ofcom's requirement of 98% coverage by 2017. The two firms will continue to compete but will pool their network infrastructure. "Exceptional customer demand for the mobile internet has challenged the mobile industry to consider innovative solutions to building a nationwide network that will be fit for our customers in the future and support the products and services that will truly make Britain digital," said Ronan Dunne, chief executive of Telefonica UK....Read more here: BBC News - Vodafone and Telefonica team up over 4G

Everything Everywhere gets 4G go-ahead from Ofcom

Telecoms regulator Ofcom has allowed Everything Everywhere, the owner of the Orange and T-Mobile networks, to use its existing bandwidth to launch fourth-generation (4G) mobile services. The move means 4G could launch in the UK earlier than previously planned. Ofcom said the move would deliver "significant benefits" to consumers that outweigh any competition concerns. Ofcom plans to auction 4G bandwidth, which allows much faster downloads, to other providers next year. Everything Everywhere will be allowed to offer 4G services from 11 September....Read more HERE

Re: Ofcom delays 4G mobile auctions

We all know that this is just a case of wanting more and more money, this technology was available ages ago, it is widely used around the world apart from a little blood sucking rock in the North Sea that its government claims to be a world beater in communications technology - my arse it is!

Blow for George Osborne as 4G auction comes up £1.2bn short of expectations

Sale could herald roll-out of superfast internet as main mobile networks each get share of airwaves. The 4G auction has ended in a humiliation for George Osborne, pulling in £1.2bn less than expected for the Treasury. But it is a boon for smartphone users, leaving mobile networks with the spare change to finance a rapid roll-out of superfast wireless internet. The biggest ever sale of British airwaves raised £2.34bn for the public purse, less than the £3.5bn the chancellor was counting on to keep government borrowing in check, and below the £4bn analysts had estimated based on prices fetched in recent European 4G auctions.

UK mobile networks will pay just 10% of the £22.5bn handed over in the 3G spectrum 13 years ago. Caught up in the 2000 dotcom boom, the industry spent so much on licences that year that it was years before they could afford to build their networks across the country. Some, including Vodafone, are still writing off the cost. "UK mobile operators paid much less than anticipated and every penny they saved on the auction will be gained by UK consumers in terms of better services," said Dario Talmesio, analyst at Informa.......Read more here
