  • Credit check for job in a bank

    Hi All,

I'm looking to change jobs (hopefully soon) and all banks do a credit check as part of their checks for new employees.

I think they just search public records, but have a settled CCJ on there and very very very low credit score..

Will this affect me getting the job? Obv accepting is subject to the checks so could be weeks before I'd find out and could end up in limbo without a job if they could say no based on my credit file..

Any help much appreciated, (talking about investment banks in a non-advisory role).

No IVA or bankruptcy on file.
    Many thanks,
    p

If it a non advisory role , I wouldn't have thought it would matter, if it was a FSA registered role it would make a difference.

Thank you! No, it's a non FSA-registered role but they do credit checks all the same for every new employee.

Makes me feel better - thank you

Official advice I believe is to contact the companies HR section and discuss things confidentially with them.

I haven't had a job offer yet and it's for a company I don't currently work for so I think it's a bit presumptious at this stage??

But thanks will do that if it comes down to it.

there is a organisation call humanities and equality which kind of specialise in workplace discrimination, might be worth giving their helpline a call, because it would be discrimination if you didn't get a job based on a credit check, ie them presuming because your credit is crap that you are basically dishonest, no evidence for that, so a wee preliminary chat wouldn't hurt.

Thanks! I will bear that in mind too!

I hoep that if I declare the CCJ on the forms when they run the checks (should be if, not when, haven't got a new job yet!) but if I do, I will also state it's satisfied because it was (just after 1 month of judgement as I didn't know about it in time sadly).

Hopefully they're just looking for honesty - i.e. that I declare it on the form and it matches what they find in my public profile.
