Do people know where their chicken comes from?

Campaigners say chicken meat needs better labelling. How much do people really know about the life of a chicken before it reaches their plate?

Someone set up a fried chicken place across the road from you then?

Maybe we have to worry about dodgy haddock as well?

agreed. Butchers meat is noticeably nicer and also nice to help support local shops wherever possible.

Re: Do people know where their chicken comes from?

Many chickens and turkeys start off as eggs on Hungarian or other Eastern European farms. They are crated and sold to both free range and battery farms where they are hatched into a life of luxury or misery.

Some poultry readers (not farmers) do not bread. Some do and employ chaps with straws to impregnate female birds. Great job.

In some areas there are real families of birds like we used to have in the olden days, and it just depends on where you live and where you shop and how honest the supply chain is.

Supermarket chickens: 70% affected by food bug

More than 70% of fresh chickens being sold in the UK are contaminated with the Campylobacter bug, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has revealed.

The figure is higher than in previous tests, which suggested a 59% contamination rate.

The highest rate was found in chickens being sold by Asda. Tesco was found to have relatively low rates of contamination.

I really believe that we should have a choice of Halal or non Halal in this country, I hate not knowing how my meat was despatched.

The thought of Halal meat makes my stomach churn..... although I bet there's a lot more goes on in abattoirs than we know as well.

Re: Do people know where their chicken comes from?

Mrs RTB has just started working in Waitrose and discovered their free range chickens are well looked after, not pumped full of chemicals, phosphates and water, and are not halal. Wouldn't be surprised if they were read a bedtime story and tucked in at night individually. So we've fallen off the veggie wagon and are now eating chicken, but only the Waitrose ones. Relatively expensive but it does make you think what life is like for the chickens that get knocked out at £4.99 in the supermarkets.
