Do utility companies - water - have the right to search your credit files? Do they have the right to authorise other companies to search your file?

To my knowledge I have never signed any agreement with the water company, and so I have never given my authority for that company to access my credit file. Do they have special rights?

They have a right to search your credit file. It is normally quite openly published that they will, and how any data will be used in their policy for when you apply to use them. An example is below:

Actually no they don't mate - not utilities, they don't unless you specifically agree to it within their DPA clauses, which with Water companies we can't as you cannot exactly pick and choose, ie it is monopolised.

Basic principles of DPA allow for a customer to opt in or out of sharing data UNLESS you have no automatic right in which case the latter always applies, so with a water company you would be excluded from any data sharing if you write in and request they do not share your data - also, you do not sign any agreement with a water company, it is supplied, they bill you and you pay - that's that.

No, a water company cannot use a CRA unless you have given express permission beforehand.

Based on the link provided I will email anglian water and question this policy and post details here for all to see and yes, if necessary I will open a formal complaint with the regulators and ICO as they are quite simply wrong, they have no automatic right to report your data.

If you need any help dealing with Anglian Slaughter let me know. I've been through the whole of World War Three with them over the past five years. I won in the end. Every penny they overcharged me has been paid back, plus compensation, and the current bills are actually a genuine reflection of the water which is used.

I'm sure their customer “services” team would love to see my name again.
