  • job application form

I've started tentatively job hunting after being off work ill for nearly a year. I still have good and bad days but also think getting back into a work routine would help me so i'm looking for a part time job. I've come across the bit below in bold on an application form, which basically says that if i meet the essential criteria i would be guaranteed an interview due to disability.

So the real question is, what do you think about this? Is it a way to get my foot in the door or would i be shooting myself in the foot?

i personally don't consider myself to have a disability, but i do tick two of the boxes below if i am being honest.

I'd rather get an interview based on my own merits but am i just stopping myself from getting an interview? I really don't know what to do for the best. I'm thinking don't declare it but then would an employer be p*ssed off down the lines that i didn't?

4 Disability: the Equality Act (2010) defines a disability as a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

Please mark box below - X

    No known disability

Physical impairment or mobility issues (such as difficulty using arms or using a wheelchair or crutches)

Specific learning disability (such as dyslexia or dyspraxia)

    Deaf or serious hearing impairment

General learning disability (such as Down's syndrome)

    Blind or serious visual impairment

Cognitive impairment (such as autistic spectrum disorder or resulting from head injury)

Mental health condition (such as depression or schizophrenia)

Long-standing illness or health condition (such as cancer, HIV, diabetes, or epilepsy)
    x
    Other type of disability

    Guaranteed Interview Scheme

We guarantee to interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for the post and consider them on their abilities. As desirable criteria would not be applied, any false declaration of disability to obtain an interview may subsequently invalidate any offer of employment or contract of employment. Should you wish your application to be considered under the scheme, please mark X in the yes box below and ensure you send this form with your application
I declare I have a disability, as defined by the Equality Act above, and wish to apply for the Guaranteed Interview Scheme (Yes)

as I've had a bit of close acquaintance recently with the employment acts etc, I don't think they are allowed to ask anymore is you have a disability of any kind unless it would detrimental to health and safety ie a blind bus driver and even then they have to be very very careful.
