  • More Than 'cancelled' auto-renewed insurance that I never even agreed to

I've just come back from a weekend break to find a moronic letter from More Th>n stating that they've "cancelled [my] home insurance policy from 27/06/2015. This was because you didn't pay the premium to renew it, before the end date we gave you."

Well, that's big of them, considering that I DIDN'T AUTHORISE THEM TO RENEW MY INSURANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE. They had failed to bother to respond to an email query on 15 June concerning possible renewal, so they lost my business and I had in fact obtained better cover through Admiral Insurance on 23 June 2015. I have fired off an email direct to the CEO, Stephen Hester, to that effect.

The main thing I need to know is whether this kind of 'cancellation' is covered in the standard "Have you ever had any insurance cancelled or had special terms imposed?" question. I gather from someone who claims to be knowledgeable about these things that such a question only covers cases where insurance has actually been voided due to fraud etc, not administrative matters like this based on attempted 'inertia selling'.

If it IS something I have to declare, what can I do to get this nonsense cleared up? I have little faith in the FOS, as they are utterly spineless. I have heard of something called the Claims and Underwriting Exchange (CUE). Could I obtain a Subject Access Request from them and take it from there?

Hi. I would suspect you are right that it's nothing to worry about but interested to hear what others think

I am now saving the money each month that was making little difference to the balance and not a bit of difference to my credit file as a result of finding AAD.

I'm sure you don't have to declare it. I'd just forget about it.

Its not a cancelled policy, the old policy expired, the new one never started.

        I'd be ignoring it

Yes having insurance cancelled literally occurs when you put in a false claim and get caught. They cancel your policy immediately and then report it to the insurance sharing database. If you ever lie on a policy the firm won't write and query it - they'll insure you and take the premium but see when you claim you'll come unstuck.

          Theyre not daft lol.

But in answer to your question no, you have not had a policy cancelled as per the definition within the policy.

Ironically im with more than and pay in one go and it's around £100 per annum. However my renewal just came in at £178. I went online and got a quote as a new customer - £65 lol. So my current policy expires on 18th and new one starts 19th

** I like More Than. They pay out. They're good. They're very quick. Been with them 15 years or so but I do faff around at renewal to save the increases.

Haha! I got car and pet insurance through them, so I got original and Safari Oleg for my granddaughter.
They take ages to arrive though, but you do get silly email updates of their adventures on their way to you

Thanks all. I should have come back sooner and let people know that More Than wrote back and confirmed that I don't have to declare it to future insurers.

Snap, just got the mrs car insurance through Hastings via compare and came out best price. A tip I discovered is that once you get the quote and it redirects you to the main hastings site, if you edit and play around with the details, for e.g, lower the voluntary excess or increase the annual mileage, the premium price stays the same. If we choose £350 vol excess it was the same price as when we chose £0 vol excess so might as well click £0. Just waiting for the silly toy now which from the daft emails we receive is still winging its way around europe.

Ooooh on mine ours changed. But their excess doesn't play a big part in premiums.

Ive got £0 excess and £95 compulsory excess (ie the very lowest) but it was annual miles that changed most as I put +15,000

We used to be with Hastings. Hit a deer at 80MPH and it almost wrote our car off - but they paid out for repairs pretty quick and without fuss. Only problem is they use that crappy Nationwide auto repair thing who write 70% of cars off or over inflate the damage. We had a specialist come who cancelled the total loss and told them to pay to fix - around £3500.

Hi i would overcome about your post that auto-renewal used to be confined to car insurance, but these days insurers use it for policies such as home insurance and even car breakdown recovery.I think It would legal for an insurance company to automatically renew your insurance policy but only when they have told you that they will do this. And Some of the insurance companies give you the option of ticking a box to say that you would like the insurance to renew automatically.
