    What a pity Virgin weren't allowed to buy disintegrating NR when they first pitched for it in 2007 before it was nationalised. That would have saved UK plc the gigantic loss we're all having to absorb now

      Have I just spotted Richard Branson's brilliant sense of humour in all this? He's negotiated to buy Northern Rock for 747 million pounds. Funny how the Virgin Atlantic fleet is entirely made up of Boeing 747s. Now that's what I call ironic

          Northern Rock: Osborne to reveal EU deal over 2013 sale

          Northern Rock had to be sold by 2013 under a deal signed by the former Labour government, Chancellor George Osborne is to reveal on Monday. The bank was sold on Thursday to Virgin Money for £747m.
