I thought they could only refuse more than 20p in 2's and 1's. The rest was unlimited. That was a while ago and might have changed. I'm sure someone will provide a link...

they can refuse whatever they want mate - if I sell goods or services and accept cash, there is no law that says I MUST accept payment in any denomination...... (is there...?)

I thought that there was, mate, tbh. I'm going back a few years and a lesson in school () It must have been economics or something like that, there was a relevance, and I was told that they had to accept up to 20p in 2's and 1's but they *could* refuse any more, but they couldn't refuse to accept any other denomination. This could have changed though as it is a while ago that I was in school I think that it was the same lesson where they said that you could write a cheque on anything - as long as it had all of the relevant information on it then you could send a pig as a cheque! I seem to remember somebody actually doing it!

        United Kingdom
In the UK, legal tender is solely for the guaranteed settlement of debts, and does not affect any party's right of refusal of service in any transaction.[16]
In the 19th century, gold coins were legal tender to any amount, silver coins were not legal tender for sums over 2 pounds, nor bronze for sums over 1 shilling. This provision was retained in revised form at the introduction of decimal currency, and the Coinage Act 1971 laid down that coins denominated above 10 pence became legal tender for payment not exceeding 10 pounds, non-bronze coins denominated not more than 10 pence became legal tender for payment not exceeding 5 pounds, and bronze coins became legal tender for payment not exceeding 20 pence.
Throughout the United Kingdom, coins valued 1 pound, 2 pounds, and 5 pounds Sterling are legal tender in unlimited amounts. Twenty pence pieces and fifty pence pieces are legal tender in amounts up to 10 pounds; five pence pieces and ten pence pieces are legal tender in amounts up to 5 pounds; and pennies and two pence coins are legal tender in amounts up to 20 pence.[17] In accordance with the Coinage Act 1971,[18] gold sovereigns are also legal tender for any amount. Although not specifically mentioned on them, the face values of gold coins are 50p; £1; £2; and £5, a mere fraction of their worth as bullion.
Bank of England notes are legal tender in England and Wales and are issued in the denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50. English banknotes can always be redeemed at the Bank of England even if discontinued. Scottish and Northern Irish bank notes are not legal tender in any part of the United Kingdom.

Yep and they have to take it, too. If they refuse then I'm sure they could be in breach of contract or something like that and then you could say something like take this or nothing and I'm sure they're pretty much snookered. I can't see them not accepting, though. They would know the law.

Merely because a bank and its staff might know the law, one should not assume they will comply with the law.

For example, it has been illegal for many years to deceive people about insurance, yet the banks merrily mis-sold 'payment protection' insurance for quite a few years.

For another example, it must surely be obvious that one should not alter files or forge the signatures of colleagues - yet that's exactly what happened at Churchill and Direct Line insurance, both owned by RBS which seems to have a company ethos of no law ever applying to them.

Barclays are back on the case, I have uploaded the latest letter from the collectors on their behalf in the private section, all they have attached with it is the terms and conditions with my current address on, not the address when I signed for the card...no signature or anything supplied so still big time unenforceable I think m8...

Hmm those lovely people at the banks seem to work harder in winter, another one back on my case now! its the other one you said was enforceable Niddy (Mint) and they have sent a letter with "notice of intended litigation" as this is pretty much the same as my Mbna card, I guess they will go ahead with it...

So just wait for the court papers and then do the monthly offer? I guess the fight is over with this one...

Still Barclays and Capital One were unenforceable, they can both DO ONE!

                            Cheers...

Hi Niddy, Mint have sent a more serious "possible litigation" letter out after sending the above, shall I just wait for their next move? I have posted the letter in the private section.

                                Cheers...
