Within large firms there is a requirement for inclusion and brownie points are awarded to applicants from certain groups of which disability is one. As a result anyone registered disabled has the 'right' to an assessment by the occupational elf and the appropriate equipment and assistance. e.g. special computer screens and software for blind and dyslexic, lift or groundfloor workroom for wheelchair users.

People go to great lengths to avoid the label disabled, i.e. anybody allocating equipment to them as they perceive that the disabled person is first and foremost a person, and the aids are to circumvent the disability enabling the person to be as productive as anybody else, and to be indistinguishable form his/her workmates. The nomenclature has changed from disability, to special needs to particular need to express this particular PCness.

That is fine, but often very expensive for all firms, who generally ignore those supposedly able-bodied as they are not covered by the DDA, and provide the minimum necessary to avoid the HSE fines.

So unless you are extremely lucky, if you are not 100%, and don't complain, you will find yourself being pushed.

A bit off topic so very sorry if it's wrong.
This may sound silly but what does disabled mean.
For example this question is asked on many application forms and is there a real definition. If for example you get some payment under DLA or are on ESA for a certain period.
Obviously if you have disabilities that can be seen, wheelchair, hearing aid, guide dog but what about if its something like sitting on a hard chair or depression or another mental health condition that isn't obvious or may be under control with medication.
Same goes for chronic long term illnesses such as diabetes , slow growing cancers, HIV etc.
