A plan to record all conversations in taxis licensed by a city council has brought complaints that the scheme is a "staggering invasion of privacy".

Oxford City Council wants to ensure all of its 600-plus cabs are fitted with at least one CCTV camera to record every word uttered by passengers.
If the plans are approved, all conversations in taxis will be recorded from once the engine is running until 30 minutes after the ignition is switched off.
But civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch has hit out at the proposals and pledged to complain to the Information Commissioner.
Nick Pickles, the group's director, said: "This is a staggering invasion of privacy, being done with no evidence, no consultation and a total disregard for civil liberties.
"Big Brother now has big ears, and they are eavesdropping on your conversations with absolutely no justification."

It could prove useful in some cases - how many "nudge nudge wink wink" meetings have occurred in the backs of cabs? You know the kind, "what have I got that will make this £140M tax bill, disappear?":niddy

Not that those meetings would ever occur in the back of a taxi - cos they didnt happen in first place apparently, and no one was there at the times given.

Witney Oxford the PM's constituency indeed, however for the majority working class citizen this is still taking the piss and an outright invasion of privacy.

Ok in sum circumstances it would be useful, but do we really need this added to what we already have by way of data invasion.

Lets not forget the PM is supposed to be against all this and is why he scrapped I.D cards because of cost and invasion of privacy.

How much will this cost the council and how far will it go? Is the cost of this better spend elsewhere like social services ?

          Regards

I am not a smoker now (gave up '85) but I am not anti smoking. We now have proposals from the BMA that smoking in private cars should be banned and made a criminal offence, (ref Jeremy Vine today ). The biggest health threat in the UK at the moment IS the BMA due to their failure to discipline the professional liars and grasping cheats that pervade their so called profession. So should they not get their house in order first before telling the rest of us what to do?

Now we have proposals for spies in cabs, how long will it be before that extends to private cars as well. To a certain extent that exists already. On one of my working away from home stints I stayed in the back of an old pub with some other contractors and one was involved with that sytem connected to those funny blue poles you see alongside the road generally with two pods at the top. His oart in the project was designing and putting togther a practical system to log your reg nummber wherever the vehicle went and store the data. So all this claptrap they can't catch criminals is utter utter hogwash. Establishment lies will always prevail the proles won't understand. that is the attitude of Authority now.

            regards
            Garlok

Don't forget this is the same loony hypocritical city council how have done the following:

Introduced an insane one way traffic system in the city centre and make parking so limited and expensive that driving into Oxford is an impossibility. People are expected to get on a park & ride miles out of the city centre to get in to work. Oxford City counsellors however have an underground carpark right below their offices.

Embraced fortnightly bin collections, garden waste bins, blue bins, brown bins and odd bins, with zeal and then pursued hapless residents who dared put the wrong type of rubbish in one of them and pursued fines of £1,000's. However when one of their counsellors has her bin raided at night to see if she practices what she preaches, guess what?! She doesn't!!

So another loony idea from a bunch of loonies. No doubt they will start insisting on their own 'private' cars to ensure that their conversations cannot be recorded and put another drain on the public purse.

"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

The consumer is that sleeping giant.!!
