First go to windows updates and update all the options and within this SP2 will eventually arrive, then you will be able to get up to date.

So once you have installed the basic set-up you simply head to updates here ---> Windows Update - Keep your PC up to date - Microsoft Windows

Then let it install a load, then restart etc and eventually SP2 will be there. If not, direct download is here ---> Download: Windows XP Service Pack 2 for IT Professionals and Developers - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Right update on the e machine.
Reinstalled from CD and downloaded SP2 to another machine and installed it on the emachine. Could not get any updates at all so downloaded SP3 to my own desktop, copied it and installed on the emachine.

Now I get to the update page but it asks to validate windows, when I say yes all I get is firstly a screen saying this may take some time do not navigate away, then I get a blank IE screen.
How do i go about validating it. I have a code on the recovery media, do I need to call Microsoft?

is it a true validate windows question because sometimes its malware.

if you do need to validate windows, dont call em, post here your build number and ill pm you a patch to run.

You can check if windows is validated by going to Start then right click my computer and select properties, scroll down to the bottom and it will say

Windows Activation and should display an image saying "Ask for Genuine Microsoft Software" blue rectangle image with a star shape.

Seems to be sorted , the date and time were wrong which I think means that there is a battery that needs replacing, but it is turned on now for a good few hours so maybe that will sort it all out

Re: more help needed. e machine

Yeah date and time change is usually due to the CMOS battery going on its way out.

Not much you can do to repair it, has to be taken to a repairer im afraid, as most are soldered on. or tricky to get to.

Charging wont make a difference, if its on its way out.

if its a desktop emachine the CMOS battery is held onto the MB with a clip not soldered (none of the various ones i've had in the past have been) pretty simple to replace £2-3 quid for a batt from maplin etc

Thankfully I've never had the misfortune of finding a CMOS battery soldered in; that would be a right pain in the ****!

BTW, sod Maplins, get on Ebay and order Ten of them for £1.35
