  • Self Assessment - Self or Accountant?

I've been working on a self employed basis for a couple of years now and have completed my own SA tax returns, but I've always erred on the side of caution when it comes to claimable allowances. Talking to others in similar positions, I most certainly claim a lot less than they do.

Before I submit my 2012-13 assessment, I was wondering if it would be worthwhile consulting with an accountant to make sure I am claiming all that I can do. Does anyone know very roughly how much this would cost? I can't really afford to end up in a worse position, but how likely is it that a very novice self assessor would be under claiming?

    Thanks

You would need to ask around for prices first. I normally pay £1400.00plus vat for my accountant. This year it was over£2000 due to specialist legal and other advice.

It all depends on your turnover and whether there is any other information needed to complete your work. i.e whether you have any pensions, employment along side self employment, and so on.

But usually we charge around £340+ for accounts and £130 to prepare and submit your SA.

If you need book keeping, and VAT services, then of course this comes at an extra price which we can work out for you, depending on your requirements.

There are companies that charge less, but quite frankly, you wont get the level of service we offer, free appointments, free tax advice etc.

Tax advice does carry a charge however if you wish to prepare your own accounts and file your own Self Assessment, for which we would charge around £30 for an hour consultation.

Its very likely that as you have been preparing your own SA's that you are underclaiming expenses, because very few people realise just what you can claim. Also if you have suffered any losses in the past this can be offset against any profits to reduce your tax liability.

If you are interested please feel free to PM me and i will give you our telephone number and name of my business partner who will be more than happy to help.
