  • CareersWales/Child Bens/Child Tax query?

My son turned 17 a few days ago, and have been registered with Careers-Wales since ending education, and a course was previously set up for him within the IT dept, but as they could not provide him with the support he required it did not go ahead. (He was to have one to one)!

So as you know he has special needs (form of autism) and we received extended Child Benefit which ended last week, they had extended it since it ended in the Summer Term, and up to now we have still been receiving Child Tax for him on a weekly basis, so will see if that stops by next week as well.

However, today I taken my son to see his Career Adviser and as my son also has an interest in Photography, there is a learning centre in our town just for 3 hours per week and to start 3 Feb 2012, this lasts for 8 weeks.

Now I am stuck on where to go with his benefits, this was arranged by the Careers office and for as long as my son is happy after a pre visit to the training company he will start on the above date.
This, he will get no training allowance, but when I emailed them when I got home, I received an email to say that my son will be entitled to CHB and Tax Credits.
Anyway, I assumed this what he was receiving was an extension and it would stop by then unless he was actually undertaking a approved training as arranged by the Careers etc.

For this sort of training, I do not think its an approved one a such and its just for 3 hours per week on a flexible basis.

Any idea on this folks, he is too young for the job centre I think but not certain, due to him still being registered with Careers.

Here is the copy of the email received from his Careers advisor below, cheers.

    Hi

Really enjoyed meeting you all today – I just wished there was more on offer for you Daniel, the provisions in this area are very limited, I really hope the photography course works out.

I have spoken to colleagues about the benefit issue and as Daniel is registered with us (looking for training or education) then he should still be entitled to Child benefit and tax credits. You will need to ring the child benefit helpline and explain he registered with careers on 30/8/11 and he is actively looking for employment, education or training. The number is 0845 3021444 – if you need a new claim form we have them in the office so if you pop in we can print them out and help you fill it in, I have spoken to **** on reception and she is happy to do this for you.

I will let you know about Crownbridge as soon as I have some information.

Please keep in touch and let me know if you hear from the learn it centre, if you haven’t heard anything by next week I can chase this for you.

    Goodluck

Think I will make a point of calling in to the Careers office next week to see if there is a benefit adviser there, and double check on this one for my son.
