Trading standards didn't bother. I had to speak to consumer people and they just told me what to write...

I have spoken to Creation who actually feel a bit sorry for me but, they want their money and that is that.

I know about all the complaints with SCS after I had the problems as I always google!

What happens now? Can I do anything about this?

I knew I wouldn't be the only one that had bad dealings with them.

I have never bought a sofa from any company like that before and I had just come from hospital and decided to look at SCS on the way back home. It was the Manager that sold it and to be honest it was a a bit of a stupid thing for me to do but, I needed a sofa as I could no longer use mine as it was too old and had no support for my back.

I asked Creation if they would pay for a sofa after whats happened and they said absolutely no way! Not really helpful to me though!

When we moved we thought we'd ditch all our old furniture (was all less than 3yrs old anyway) and buy everything new ready for moving in.....

We used Harvey's - got bugger all discount and waited the grand total of 21 weeks for the sofa etc. in the end we cancelled the rest as we had an empty house.

Since that, I don't trust any of the dirty bastards. They import most of it from India at a 6000% mark-up. Quite disgraceful really.

I am sure SCS and Argos where involved.

    Never.

At least, not when they still have a ready supply of victims just waiting to be duped into thinking they're getting a bargain sofa made just for them by skilled craftsmen in the UK.

The sofas are actually made by semi-skilled factory workers in mainland China and, even considering the cost of transporting the goods to the UK, the landed cost after import duty and VAT have been paid is probably not much more than a quarter of the selling price.

Absolutely mate. It was worth more than the bit extra to be treated like that alone. I just wish more would behave that way.

That suggests their pay structure is different

The spiv companies pay a low basic wage and give bonuses or commission on sales. They also give commission on credit deals, 'maintenance insurance' and such like, all of which will bump up the price the victim customer will pay.

I think we paid about 6% more than what SCS and DFS could offer for what we thought was inferior product from them.

The other thing I liked was the approach to sales, i.e. we weren't pounced on instantly by some commission driven salesperson. They waited until we had been looking around for some time and then we were approached by a guy who just asked what we were looking for, told him. explained we had found 3 or 4 we liked but could we have just what we wanted. No problems and they even left us alone to go outside into daylight with whole bookfuls of fabric swatches so Mrs G could decide. Then and only when we had demos of the reclining mechanisms etc. and had retried the seating positions did they ask if we would like to order. All very civilised when compared with the usual in the big stores.

Yes it was a bit more expensive but not a lot in percentage terms.
Was it significantly less expensive (and, if you can recall, by how much) than obtaining something similar from an independent upholsterer?

SCS are just a bad outfit. Take a walk around the stores, Sorry to say a company that needs a constant half price sale and then some advertised on the telly continuously has to have problems with its goods/quality/prices.

    Caveat emptor.

We are fairly lucky in that all of these big chain stores are grouped pretty close together in a retail park at Chester. Not a long drive from us and you can make direct comparisons in a morning.

That is incredible, but then at the same time not surprising that a consumer has had to go pretty much all the way to court for a company to admit it is in the wrong.

I am certain that this is now a standard tactic for many corporates, that the cost benefit of fobbing people off, outweighs the odd occasion of having legal action taken against them.

I had to admit it was an eyeopener to something I had never thought of which is that the furniture you order in store may be a completely different size to what gets delivered!

As the sofa was purchased on credit, section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 (link) applies, unless the sofa cost less than £100.

They cannot evade their liability by arguing that it is barely worth £10.
