I used to run a website and the information we provided to paying clients was valuable and sensitive. This attracted a lot of attention from people so we had to block their IP address. You do it using IPTABLES and IIRC it wasn't too tricky. I would need to speak to a friend who did all the work and ask if he has some reference data for you.
Are you running a Linux server with something like Joomla?
