  • Not in front of the telly: Warning over 'listening' TV

Samsung is warning customers about discussing personal information in front of their smart television set.

The warning applies to TV viewers who control their Samsung Smart TV using its voice activation feature.

Such TV sets "listen" to some of what is said in front of them and may share details they hear with Samsung or third parties, it said.

Privacy campaigners said the technology smacked of the telescreens, in George Orwell's 1984, which spied on citizens.

Data sharing The warning came to light via a story in online news magazine the Daily Beast which published an excerpt of a section of Samsung's privacy policy for its net-connected Smart TV sets.

Oops! I have one of those. The damn microphone icon pops up every time I turn it on.
Looks like I need to alter settings, although all they'd probably get from me is "can you get me another glass of wine love?"

The alarms given out to vulnerable people that call out the services if there is a problem, also appear to listen in.

A few months back my sister was putting on the Christmas tree lights. My mother had managed to wind all the cables into a mess. Sis unplugged the 3 sets of lamps' plugs, the TV and the alarm controller that is attached to the phone. She plugged the lights back in for a test and fiddled around with the decorations.

About 5 mins after the unplugging, the telephone rang. It was the alarm people checking up. My sister answered, they introduced themselves and said they were ringing because the alarm was off. She responded that she was sorting out the Christmas tree, they said 'Yes we heard'.......... oooooohhhhh! It wasn't established if the phone is 'on' all the time or just when there is an alarm ie, the pendant is pressed or the phone/controller is knocked over/turned off.
