Ah, it wasn't that. It just required the computer to be completely powered off for more than half a minute for the settings to take effect.

So I got past that hurdle and now have an actual Mac screen inside VirtualBox.

The current snag is that it says "Select the disk where you want to install..." but doesn't actually give me any drives to choose from. Obviously I'm going to have to play with the VB settings a bit more.

Will show a screenshot later. At the moment, I still haven't got around to reinstalling Photoshop since installing Windows 8.

UPDATE: I simply had to virtually format the virtual hard drive in Mac format. The virtual Mac is currently installing itself to this virtual disc.

      SUCCESS!

This message is being posted from the 'Apple Mac' running on my PC.

There are some weird quirks though. The mouse wheel scrolls in the wrong direction and the caps lock is in lowercase when the caps lock light is on and vice versa. Haha, otherwise all seems OK.

Next trick is to attempt to get the installer onto a USB stick (I've just put one in and the Mac can see it, which is a good start).

So, for those who asked me to report how I got on, I can confirm that it's pretty straightforward to get it working within VirtualBox. Give me a couple of days before I start working on putting OSX on here for 'real' though.

        That's not very good.

There are things that Windows is good at, things that Linux is good at and things that Mac is good at. It's good to have the choice - and all in one machine too.

Anyway, for those who may have missed it, I got OSX working within VirtualBox.

And here's the screenshot as promised.

By the way, can those who just don't "get" this thread leave it alone instead of making it all about them? Thanks.

I was not aware it was getting at all heated.

I was just hoping that someone might explain what is supposedly so splendid about the Apple OS apart from the really cool names they give to each version. Calling the OS "Rainforest Panther" or "Snow Leopard" just has to be better than adding go-faster stripes to the case.

There is one advantage of which I know - Apple OS handles larger volumes of RAM much better than does Windoze, which is why Hauptwerk preferred the Mac to the PC. How does Linux handle RAM?

I found Windows 8 noticeably improved over Windows 7/Vista/XP in terms of overall performance and memory handling.

I can't speak for current versions of Ubuntu (due to it not getting on with my Radeon card - that project is on the back burner for now) but I found 11.04 to have been more efficient overall than Windows XP - except that I found Firefox was noticeably less 'snappy' in Ubuntu than it was in Windows. The Gnome desktop can be a bit sluggish.

As for "Why?" Quite simply, it's down to the software being better for certain tasks on some platforms than others. I find music production software such as Ableton works better on the Mac platform and the same goes for desktop publishing (my occupation is journalism, so it definitely helps to be familiar with the Mac versions of software such as Quark Xpress and Indesign). I still need Windows for Microsoft Office stuff and for gaming. Linux is more at a hobbyist level for me (I'll be building a Linux box with spare parts shortly as well as resuming my fight with Ubuntu's default Radeon drivers on my main box). Linux is a very good platform for learning web development on, which is another line of work I'm seeking to break into.

So I hope that's all the "why" questions catered for now. This is intended to be a "how to" thread and I'll post more updates as I make progress. The next step is to put an actual Mac installation on my machine instead of just under VirtualBox.
