I really dont see the idea/brains/workings that, if you have a child, the Government has to pay you £1000+ per year.

Child benifit was originally set up because there was a shortage of people to continue the workforce and drive the economy.

Basically, it was a bribe to make you have kids.

Its an outdated policy now because we are overwhelmed with people, and thats why it should be scraped.

Perhaps some people benifit from it by having 5 or 6 kids, but i cant see it making much difference in my life, if i had it or not.

Child Benefit (as we now call it) was first introduced at the end of WW2 under the Family Allowances Act 1945. I can't say whether "people managed without it before then" but maybe you can.

It's always paid direct to the mother and not the father of a child which may tell you something about the necessity for this subsidy and the prevalence of feckless fathers.

Crap. It was introduced in 1937 to less well off mothers and to ALL mothers in 1945 - in order to "increase the birth rate"

While it may be true there are fathers out there that dont give a shite, there are mothers also (although a smaller percentage) where the boot fits - they just dont get any publicity. And are you intimating that if it was paid the fathers it would be wasted?

You're wrong with your first statement (that bit about I was talking "Crap") because I was relying on Cabinet Papers in the National Archives:

                    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...ld-benefit.htm

You're right with your second statement when you ask: "are you intimating that if it was paid to fathers it would be wasted". Yes I am.

Fair enough, the information I was looking at was incorrect / misleading.

So, are ALL men a waste of space or just the ones you happen to know?

But those are now what are considered a necessity rather than luxury (maybe not internet)

Children are neither, thats a personal choice in most cases.

I'm happy to say that all men are not a waste of space based on a my personal research over the years. My research is ongoing

I'm not sure I'd go quite as far as Niddy re benefits, BUT I can see absolutely nothing wrong with people having to work for their benefits. If they're skilled, let them do something skilled; if they can't 'do anything' then have them litter picking etc... for their money.

Totally agree on crime - a hint of Singapore would do no harm. You get caught thieving, they chop your hands off; Murder someone - they murder you. It's one of, if not THE safest countries to live in.

Credit - get shot of it for all things except mortgages and possibly cars. Otherwise, if you can't afford it, do without and SAVE MONEY!
                            Seriously, it is possible.
