Omg vista was a pile of shit. Crashed at every possible chance. Problems with installations. You don't need the tile. Interface with win 8.just install a little program that replaces the start button and viola you are back to win 7 desktop version. Can still switch to tiles if you prefer.

But why? Win7 is better than 8 so why install a worse OS to mask it to look like win7

I loved XP for how much you could tinker with it.
Vista was for people who just want to jump on and drive and be told what not to do without a clue how it works under the hood.
I bought a new Win 7 PC before I really needed one just to avoid Windows 8. I like Win 7, so I'll test drive 10 on my lappy before changing over.
Good that they've finally seen sense and giving free upgrades.

If you want to give it a try and have a decent amount of RAM, you can download the Windows 10 preview DVD images to install and test in VirtualBox https://www.virtualbox.org without having to take the risk of installing over your current OS. Yet.

Here seems much better than Win 8, and when running in desktop mode as good as Win 7 is/was.

I couldn't agree more with that!

I can work nice and fast in 7, but H8 was such a nightmare I sent the PC back for a refund. The main problem wasn't the missing start button or menu, it was an idiotic menu on the side of the screen. It was called a 'charms bar', but was really as charming as Albert Steptoe's underwear.

It kept putting a silly menu on the screen at random when you moved the cursor, making it impossible to work. The nearest illustration I can find, for the benefit of those who can drive vehicles, is that of attempting to drive while a sheet keeps appearing over the windscreen at random intervals. How long could you stay on the road?

I can't upgrade my main PC as I've got no way of connecting it to the internet. It is stuck with Windows 7 and Linux Mint 14 until I can get a connection again. My old laptop is still running XP and Mint 13, and as it ain't broke I'm reluctant to try to fix it.

I'd like to test out 10, just to see if anything has been learned from the obscenity that was Hate. I'll believe it when I see it.

By the way, did you know that AAD was getting some impressive search engine rankings? If you type “Microbug Windows Hate” into Google, my thread comes up as the first listing, even above all of the specialist technology sites and electronic magazines.

I've got 4 GB. Might give that a try.

The guest OS needs (potentially) 1 or 2 GB of RAM spare above what else your computer is using to run OK depending if you install 32 or 64 bit, so could work OK on that.

Got 8GB here so runs quite smoothly, even in full screen.

If you Google Windows 10 and Virtualbox you can find some guides to getting it set up.

Cheers Riz. Only average about 1.45 GB at the mo so should be fine. I'm running win 7 64 bit.

If needed you can install the 32 bit Win 10 even if your host Win 7 machine is 64, so worst case you could try that I think.

I'll almost certainly update 8.1 to 10 on my spare HD here. Nothing to lose as it's not my primary OS, so if it goes wrong I'll just wipe the disk.

I'm sure I've got stacks of updates to 8.1 to install, but with all the new stories about Microsoft botching recent updates, I can't even be bothered to boot into Windows to try.
