  • New computer

    Hi
I think the time has come for a new computer. I have fallen in love with the top end apple laptop but at £2K+ is a bit out of my price range. On top of that I used to windows. I have vista at the moment.

I have seen some win7 pcs around as well as win8 but have heard bad and good things about win8.

Can anyone tell me what basic specs I need. I would like a reasonable start up and reaction time. How much ram do I need?
Mostly use it for internet, email , watching video downloads such as iplayer and youtube and the odd video file given by friends. Oh also photos and music but I do have external hard drives.

I dont trust the staff at pcworld which is why I am asking here

Please dont be too technical lol

Why not just get a standard £300-£400 laptop from Tesco? That price range will more than do what you need.

      Re: New computer

Thanks. I have thought of that but has suffered from buying bargain basement in the past. Doesn't minimum spec mean minimum ability and soon outdated? I don't want top notch but I do want something that will still have speed in 2 or 3 years time.

I got my latest laptop from John Lewis because they offer a free two year warranty as standard. They also have an excellent Computer and Software Support Team available over the phone (not a premium number) from 9 am till 8 pm seven days a week. It cost me £267. It came with Windows 8 which I love. The only regret I have is I should have bought the touch screen version.

I know nothing about computer technology so presume if I've got megabytes I should see a doctor What I do know is that the technology evolves so fast that I would prefer a cheap one which I can dump for a better model in two or three years time. I probably got that approach from my ex-husband

Well we have a big new John Lewis opening at some pount in the city centre when the station is finished. Not sure how big the one in Solihull is. Might be worth me looking online.
I have no wish for it to be cutting edge but good enough to cope with the resource hungry programs and operating systems that seem to get hungrier as every day passes

Don't buy anything for a warranty. It's not worth it and you just said you don't expect it to last forever. Forget extra warranty - just buy what you need. A warranty is a waste of money. Even the free extended ones come with so much terms and exclusions they're shyte.

Well if I can get a free extended warranty at a similar price I would. From what I know of JL they are quite good. Not a JL shopper myself far too self important for my liking (and too expensive)
