Re: How much should l ask dtr to pay?
My 18 yr old son is in a minimum wage job earning around £125 a week and from that he pays his own car, clothing, holiday and living expenses. In fact he pays for pretty much everything himself and rarely eats more than a sandwich at home as he gets cheap food in work. He also does all of his own washing etc. I think the only thing I directly pay for him is his mobile contact, and even with that he's only ever run up a bill over and above his contract once (and that was a couple of years ago when he went abroad with his dad).
I've always told him that as soon as he finished college and I lost his child benefit, then he would be expected to pay towards his 'keep'. I think this was the main reason he stayed in college as long as he did, even when he hated this last year of his course.
He's dropped out of college now and is trying to pick up extra hours in work - but I still haven't asked him to contribute yet. He struggles already what with car insurance being as stupidly expensive for boys as it is, so I figure if he was paying for his keep then he'd only end up asking to 'borrow' money all the time. I guess it's a swings and roundabouts thing at the moment.

They've all paid their own mobile phone bills, clothes, bus/train fares, car expenses, make-up and socialising costs etc but I didn't take any board from them.
When I was able, I helped them out from time to time if something major/unexpected happened, but they've always paid it back.
Once she's finished uni. and on her feet though, she can have all her bills back...but the house-keeping will stay low.

Re: How much should l ask dtr to pay?
My daughter's in her second year at uni.... and it's not been too bad financially because she got a Gifted & Talented scholarship through them as well (although I had to fight blood and guts to get it!!)
I currently pay her mobile phone bill and her car tax and insurance. When she finds work at the end of all this, she will of course pay something towards housekeeping but not a huge amount because of reasons I said in an earlier post; I want her (and the bf) to be able to save for a deposit.
I'm very proud of how she's managing her money actually; she budgets very well, doesn't blow it on going out and so far, has managed without racking up an overdraft whatsoever.... and perhaps the greatest gift of all was her saying that she wouldn't have achieved half as much over the years without my support.
Bless!!!

I've already helped afore mentioned son through uni. If I'm really lucky at one point I will have THREE going through uni at the same time

I still pay my daughter's mobile bill and she doesn't even live with me anymore but I want to make sure she's got no excuse not to call Mummy every day
I also subsidise her car tax etc just to ensure that I get invited to Christmas lunch again this year
She's my daughter not a balance sheet

I think as parents we have a moral obligation to charge rent and to show our kids what its like in the real world. unless your willing to always bail them out then not teaching them that stuff costs money your not doing them any favours.
Once released into the wild they will not know how to survive. Don't feel bad OP charge the kid!

cymruambyth - you're a soft touch! Can I come and live with you please?
I think your son should at least be paying towards the upkeep of his car - and buying his own footie kit!

Re: How much should l ask dtr to pay?
My step son at home pays 35.00-40.00 per week kids aint cheap!
My rule is if your in school board is free -- if your working or not working its not free.
Personally I think with my lil guy if hes still living at home (and i hope he is!!) I will charge him 35 a week and keep it for him x

I must be a soft touch (which partially if not wholly explains our finances). Eldest son been to uni etc, moved back home, now earning £1000 pcm and pays £20 pcw. For this he gets food, drink, washing, ironing, even the footsie kit etc
He does drive brothers around if it fits in with his calendar, but conversely muggins fetches him at all hours of night and day when he socialises.
Ps, forgot to mention we also pay insurance, MOT and maintenance on his car.
Pps, it is nice having him home, if only he didn't eat so much, enjoy lying on the sofa and watching either football or kerrange!Last edited by cymruambyth; 25 April 2012, 20:18.
