      Where would you be able to rent including food and bills for £120 per week, let alone half of it lol.

      I think £20 per week is about right, £80 - 100 a month is plenty.

        Thanks for all the comments -

        l have decided to keep a record of all the expenditure for her for a week, so she can see were the money goes. Obviously some things will be a rough guide but l want to highlight to her that costs add up and maybe forgoing one designer top a week might be necessary!

        My husband and l have agreed £20 per week and she pays for her own mobile phone - will see how this works.

          That sounds fair Flo

          I always had to pay my keep at home and i think it is right to do so. I do know many parents that take the board and put in a savings but the fact it the child never knew they were doing this so thought that they were still contributing to the house and had a nice suprise when they moved out!!

          My parents could NO WAY afford to do that so I never minded and as people have said it gets you thinking about money and budgeting at a young age.

                  I must be a soft touch (which partially if not wholly explains our finances). Eldest son been to uni etc, moved back home, now earning £1000 pcm and pays £20 pcw. For this he gets food, drink, washing, ironing, even the footsie kit etc
                  He does drive brothers around if it fits in with his calendar, but conversely muggins fetches him at all hours of night and day when he socialises.
                  Ps, forgot to mention we also pay insurance, MOT and maintenance on his car.

                  Pps, it is nice having him home, if only he didn't eat so much, enjoy lying on the sofa and watching either football or kerrange!

                    My step son at home pays 35.00-40.00 per week kids aint cheap!

                    My rule is if your in school board is free -- if your working or not working its not free.


                    Personally I think with my lil guy if hes still living at home (and i hope he is!!) I will charge him 35 a week and keep it for him x

                      I think your son should at least be paying towards the upkeep of his car - and buying his own footie kit!

                        I think as parents we have a moral obligation to charge rent and to show our kids what its like in the real world. unless your willing to always bail them out then not teaching them that stuff costs money your not doing them any favours.

                        Once released into the wild they will not know how to survive. Don't feel bad OP charge the kid!

                          I'm the forum administrator and I look after the theme & features, our volunteers & users and also look after any complaints or Data Protection queries that pass through the forum or main website. I am extremely busy so if you do contact me or need a reply to a forum post then use the email or PM features offered because I do miss things and get tied up for days at a time!

                              I still pay my daughter's mobile bill and she doesn't even live with me anymore but I want to make sure she's got no excuse not to call Mummy every day

                              I also subsidise her car tax etc just to ensure that I get invited to Christmas lunch again this year

                              She's my daughter not a balance sheet

                                Your lucky , if she goes to uni it will cost you alot more . I could pay my daughter £50pw to stay home and still be quids in
