  • Another Red Arrows Tragedy

    Linkhttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-accident.html

Sad news, another member of the Red Arrows has been killed in a tragic accident. This time on the ground, it appears that for what ever reason his ejector seat fired and while they are designed to work on the ground the pilot suffered fatal injuries.

My thoughts and condolences go out to his family, colleagues and the team.

    Handy.

So sad to hear of this latest tragedy to hit the Red Arrows.

I've seen them several times and their flying is spectacular.

        RIP Flt Lt Sean Cunningham.

          Re: Another Red Arrows Tragedy

Yes I was gutted to learn of yet another tragic accident to hit the Red Arrows. The Hawk jet they use is one of the few jets that the ejector seat can actually be deployed while the airplane is still on the ground. But still the pilot needs to arm it first, usually just before take off, so whether this is what he did and then there was an instant malfunction to set it off I don't know, that’s something the investigation team will be looking closely into.

I understand he was launched through the closed canopy, now these canopies are really tough to withstand the enormous G's the airplane pulls when doing fast maneuvers, so I suspect he would have suffered fatal injuries even if the chute had time to deploy, I don’t think he would have known much of what was going on, I think he would have succumbed to his injuries before he hit the ground .
In which case it may give some small comfort to his family that he did not suffer.

RIP Flt Lt Sean Cunningham. I salute you.

            Re: Another Red Arrows Tragedy

It will be a while before the findings of the investigation are announced. The Martin Baker MK10 ejector seat fitted to the Hawks are incredibly reliable but something has gone badly wrong.

The Canopy on the Hawk has a small explosive cord running through it and is designed to explode outwards a fraction of a second before the seat launches allowing the pilot to clear the canopy safely.

I imagine there are a lot of technicians burning the midnight oil running safety checks on every seat of this type fitted to RAF aircraft.

I would hate to think that spending cuts are affecting the serviceability of our Aircraft.

            Regards, Handy.

What I'd like to know is why he was even in the aeroplane, if he wasn't going to fly it.

Was he looking for a lucky mascot he'd mislaid?
