Yahoo! 'to be sold' before it announces chief executive to replace Carol Bartz
Yahoo! is likely to be sold before it appoints a new chief executive to replace ousted Carol Bartz, sources close to the company have claimed.
Microsoft, which tried to buy the web search company in 2008 for $45bn, or $31 a share, is expected to reprise its bid. "Some of the same rationale - in terms of expertise in display advertising and search - still stands, so if Microsoft can get it for half the price, it will want to do so," said a source close to Yahoo!. AOL is also tipped as a likely candidate to merge with Yahoo!, which is strategically appealing but the latter has stagnated for the past few years while rivals Google and Facebook have flourished.
