Re: Windows 8 Is Entirely Unusable
Finally got all my hard drives working again. To disable power up in standby, you need to boot into a Linux live cd, I used Ubuntu, go to terminal then sudo hdparm -iI /dev/sd? first command will show all the hard drive options with warnings. Then sudo hdparm -so /dev/sd? this will show that you have disabled PUIS. Hard drives back to life. Until Microsoft mess up again!

Re: Windows 8 Is Entirely Unusable
Reason I said was because I downloaded from same link to replace trial of Nitro Pro 9 that came with this laptop and all I got was reader despite it saying Adobe X1 and not Adobe Reader as has been the case before

No you won't. It's fine - you can ignore that post from Pompey just now.

Golly, I hope I'm not going to have to go through this nightmare again. It didn't ask me to sign up to any trial period in the link Niddy gave me although I admit I didn't stop to read the Ts & Cs before I downloaded itOriginally posted by pompeyfaith View PostI think what you have if not paid a subscription is a trial version of Adobe X1 Full, it will revert back to Adobe Reader once trial ends.

If that doesn't sort your pdf's right click on one and open with -> select default PDF reader - select it as default / always open with this program option.
If neither work don't worry, we can uninstall / reinstall Adobe and that will sort it but first check for Adobe version update

Re: Windows 8 Is Entirely Unusable
Now you have updated Adobe to a newer version there should be no problems with further updates to Windows.Originally posted by PlanB View PostWell there'll be no more updates allowed from now on that's for sure !
Sounds like it was the age old - Old outdated Software no longer compatible with the OS and one of the Updates updated a core OS file that the old version of Adobe relied on to function.
Unfortunately I see this scenario most days :-)

Re: Windows 8 Is Entirely Unusable
Quite the opposite lol - they do behave logically hence we worked through a small list of things which resolved the issue...... It had to be the updates and/or something associated with said updates.Originally posted by PlanB View PostI struggle because computers don't behave in a logical way. They are a law unto themselves.
Glad you got there in the end
