You'll be fine. Reboot as and when asked and work through them all one by one

I've already told the machine to ask me nicely next time it wants to do an update, and I'll let it know first.

I'm busy uninstalling all the updates but I'm working with blind faith here so I hope you and Riz aren't playing a practical joke on me. You'll soon know if I don't login ever again!

    Thanks.

I can't wait to get to item No 6 on your list so I can nip out to Waitrose for vodka supplies which are running low after the trauma of that Windows 8.1 update

I'm almost there. I can see about 20 updates installed on 29th November so do I uninstall all of them?

Scroll down to "How to uninstall...." - then delete last nights updates. That might be easier --> http://windows.mercenie.com/windows-...-in-windows-8/

    1. Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features and click on “View Installed Updates” on the left side bar of open Window.
OR Press Windows Key + W to open the Setting Search screen. Type Windows Update on the search box and Click on “View Installed Updates” on the search result.
    2. It will show you the list of installed updates in your Windows 8 system.
    3. Now select the update package that you want to uninstall. Right Click of mouse on it and choose “Uninstall“.
    4. User Account Control (UAC) will ask for your confirmation about removing the updates. Just Click on “Yes“.
    5. Again UAC will ask you to save and close the open Application. Just Click on “Uninstall“.
    6. Wait for some time till the uninstallation process for finishes.
    7. Reboot Your System. That is it.

It could be the association has changed to that default PDF document instead of the default program.

To to check go to a PDF (any) that you have saved -> right click -> open with (default program) -> then choose Adobe PDF viewer / Adobe 8 or your default PDF program -> click save.

    like this --> http://techforluddites.com/windows-8...opening-files/

    That makes sense (printer/scanner settings).

I can open my PDFs but they all show the same document no matter what it's called.

I'll look at how to reverse last night's update, but I can't face it tonight.

    I've emailed you.

Could be. Why not reverse last night updates via system restore..? A restore only reverts program changes not any files etc you save....

Re: Windows 8 Is Entirely Unusable

Everything has gone different after the Windows 8.1 unauthorized update last night

When I scan a document it appears as JPEG on my laptop when they used to be saved as PDFs.

And when I open my stored PDFs they all show the last document I scanned (a PDF) not the real document hiding in there somewhere - where have they all gone?

I may have messed-up when I clicked "Yes" to return my scanner settings to default in the hope that would turn the clock back to how I used to do things.

I have no idea what is going on and I'd rather not do an un-install thing because I know I'll only make matters worse and I'm really busy at the moment so need my laptop and printer/copier/scanner to simply work.
